— 28 WEST 125 STREET · Manhattan“Pros: Spacious apartment with natural lighting, overlooked Marcus Garvey Park, convenient location. Would be a great apartment under different management. Cons: Bad management, small kitchen area, not enough space for garbage/recycling, and there was only one washer and one dryer for the whole building and they almost never worked. But the worst part by far was management. We had issues with our toilet since we moved in, and we had flagged those issues to management. One day towards the end of our lease, our toilet malfunctioned so badly that it caused an electrical fire 2 floors down. Management tried to fine us $600 in damages, which we refused because we had told them of these issues months ago. It turned into a rough back and forth (to the point where I started consulting some lawyer friends) until the toilet malfunctioned again when we weren’t home. After that, we sent a final email reiterating that we’re not paying the fine. They never responded, but they also never pursued the fine. It also took almost 2 months to get our security deposit back. Advice to landlord: Sell the building to someone who actually cares about their tenants.”
“Pros: Quiet, mostly always clean, everything works, convenient location, washer/dryer always free when I need it, serious problems fixed quickly. Cons: Wall in bedroom is warped slightly, bedroom window is nearly impossible to open. The super also has a full time job so he is gone for large parts of the day (I got locked out once and he wasn’t going to be home for several hours). Worst thing about building is area. People hang out on the stoops and do crack regularly and packages are sometimes stolen. Not sure what the building can do to fix this but it is a major nuisance and I get how some might feel it unsafe. Advice to landlord: Come up with a better mail system so not as many packages go missing.”
