The apartment is so noisy due to renovations and it takes 3-4 weeks...

The neighborhood is great and safe but the property itself is a nightmare! The building would be great for DePaul students since the nightlife here is excellent with easy access to public transportations (taxis, bus route 22, 36 just outside the property and 151 a block away). However, there are constructions going on ALL THE TIME with constant problems/malfunctions of the elevator (and there is only ONE elevator in each wing which is crazy), laundry machines, toilets, plumbing, etc.. If there ever is a moment of peace and quite then the poor insulation would easily allow you to hear your neighbors footsteps upstairs and music next door. The reason of all the ongoing constructions (according to management) is that the building is old and the previous managing company did not do much so the current managing company (Group Fox) is trying to "catch up" with the maintenance... I've seen the newly renovated unit and I have to admit it's really nice with brand new kitchen appliances (microwave, refrigerator, countertop, stove, oven, dish washer) and better layout compared to the older units but again be warned that unless you are fine with living in a building similar to construction site with the noises, dusts, and inconveniences, you will look for better options out there.

I cannot echo what the last reviewer posted more. When I first moved here a few years ago, this was yes, a vintage building, but still a pretty decent place to live. Now, it's like living in the middle of an active construction zone. I could be wearing earplugs in my apartment, and it wouldn't matter, the noise is so awful. Forget about ever taking a day off of work and spending a day relaxing in your apartment. And no matter how much you keep your windows shut, the awful dust gets in. The fitness center is a joke, too....the machines will maybe, maybe be fixed for a week, tops, then they will be broken for who knows how long again. The only decent thing about the place are the nice front desk people and some of the nice maintenance people.

An elevator which has never been fixed, sub-par gym equipment which is always broken, old washers and dryers that cost $1.50 and do a horrible job, horrible paint jobs on the doors which cover the original brass hardware and an hideous kitchen which, judging by the design, hasn't been updated since the 80s are all yours for the bargain price of $1,311 a month!? This is no joke. 401-411 is a terrific waste of money. You can find exactly what they have here plus more for the same price elsewhere. But the icing on the cake is this: the perpetual construction on the exterior of the building. It's ugly and uninviting from the outside and the work that is done causes dust to blow into your windows. If open them, you'll get an apartment full of grainy dust all over your furniture and floor. It's HORRIBLE, yet they offer absolutely no solution nor sympathy for this despite the fact that the building has no air conditioning and summer will be here soon and open windows are the only method of cooling a unit down save a window-unit air conditioner, which, again, requires one have an open window. You would think that with all of this inconvenience, they would provide compensate with a lower rent. Think again.

This place is WAY overpriced for this area. The elevators suck, the manager is BEYOND rude. I actually talked to previous tenants who moved out because of her. And agree with previous poster regarding the 60 day notice --they show your apartment anytime they want, with no notice but a 2 second phone call as they are already standing at your door. Very rude! Place needs remodeling BIG TIME -- my apartment was nice but I was embarrassed to bring guests in the lobby and hallways. The carpeting is from a bad Vegas hotel banquet hall.....and the paint color in the halls is putrid. Again SO not worth the money! They do nothing to do upkeep in the building and you are paying for nothing. Look around before you jump the gun on this place!

I completely agree with many of the postings I have read. I felt like I was reading my own words. ------, the property manager is so awful and rude. She barges in my apartment without 48 hours notice and says she can. I am moving out after one year because I am so unhappy with the management. Aside from the management though, I love my apartment. Hardwood floors are beautiful.

The management treats you like you are an inmate and they are there to keep you in line. They have no respect for residents and are extremely rude. Unfortunately, I think this attitude is top-down and has come mostly from the manager of the building, ------. She is the rudest, meanest, nastiest woman I have ever met. I would stay in the building if it were not for her and how she treats in the building. She has also done a very poor job of taking care of the building. it is so run down. She re-did the front of the building on the cheap and it is extremely tacky. The other women at the front desk are not particularly friendly and act as if it is their job to treat us like it is a dorm. You can do better.

I have lived here for about two years (only because of the proximity to depaul university). If you do not care about the bars, the beach and zoo this is probably not the spot for you. And I feel sorry for you if you have a car. Don't even think about driving in the area during the summer time (traffic is ridiculous between the beach goers and zoo visitors, being directly off of the Fullerton exit is a curse and a blessing). And watch where you park, if you can find a spot, you will get towed from the residential areas and peoples cars are regularly broken/hit up and down sheridan. I'd say maintenance is responsive though.....But my number one pet peeve is the open house (from 9am -8pm) seven days a week for the last 60 days before your lease expires. They have no concept of setting up an appointment or giving you more than 2 min. notice before they come through your door. And then there is the occasional brown water. The pipes are old and rusted so expect that from time to time. To remedy the problem they put something in it to make it "soft" therefore your water will never be completely clear but instead slightly foggy. And heat in the winter is non-existent. Sometimes its warmer outside than it is in the actual apartment. Other than that its fine. But expensive. But fine.

My fiance and I have lived here since September, 2006 and have absolutely loved it. Great location, beautiful architecture, nice big one bedrooms for couples to split (especially for the price!) - and with views overlooking the park. We love being so close to the Lakepath and the gym is nice to have in the winter when running by the lake isn't an option. That being said, looks like most of the negative reviews have come from people who have tried to fix problems they have come across. We have just been lucky enough to not run into the problems in the first place. We plan to stay here for another year.
