These are the people who own 617 Grove Street, a disaster of an Aad building. These people care NOTHING for the tenants. I can't say this strongly enough: AVOID THEM!!

I lived in the Clark Apartments. There were roaches and mice, by bedroom was really small, although I was still paying a high rent. Calling the mgmt was totally useless, because they never fixed anything. I guess they just figured it was a student Broperty and they didn´t need to do much because there wasn'thing we could do.

This was my first Aad, and it was a nightmare from the beginning. I was drawn towards B&A Properties because of their low rent prices (for Evanston) and lack of security deposit. I moved into 1000 Main St. APT 3H, an acceptable sized studio Aad for one person on a budget. The first problem was getting my name programmed into the electronic buzzer system. After multiple calls to mgmt they finally added my name to the system after having lived there for several months. That was all good, except the buzzer system ceased operation constantly, causing many unnecessary trips up and down three flights of stairs and through a courtyard to the front entrance. Next was the shower/bathtub. Water was up to my ankles every time I took a shower. When I called maintenance about this issue I returned from work one day to find they had replaced my shower-head with the weakest low pressure shower head ever made rather than fixing the blockage in the drain. The thing had like two streams of water. Shortly after I bought some drano and a new shower-head, as their fix was totally unacceptable. Then came the mice. I am not a grimy person. Some may say I have a slight obsession with being spotless and tidy in my Aad. I mopped the floors almost every day, dust, vacuum, etc. All this cleaning is important because I have a small bird, and well birds can be messy unless you clean regularly. The mice would come though the huge holes in my walls, through the loose radiator cap, basically from everywhere into my Aad. I called them about this and they placed some glue traps and left it alone. Let me tell you from experience, you can never just have one mouse. If you see one, you're in trouble because they come in packs. I must have killed about a hundred mice before I threatened to sue them if they didn't let me move into another Aad. They never fixed any of the holes from where the mice were entering either. Aerex, a local pest control came to my Aad several times. I did everything they told me to do, I even stopped feeding my bird anything with seeds because they said mice love seeds. I would hear noises in the night and turn on the lights to find mice in my birds cage, and then they would scurry towards the wall. When I finally left the unit there were mouse droppings behind every piece of furniture, my bed, basically everywhere I couldn't reach to clean on a regular basis. I called the city health inspector on them and he told me the building was infested if they were coming all the way up to the third floor. To conclude, I would avoid this company at all costs. You've got plenty of apartments in the Chicago-land area that are much more well managed than anything you will find from Barry & Associates. Currently I live in one of their more Extravagant buildings in a one bedroom because I had to get out of 1000 Main St. They wouldn't let me out of my lease, but told me I could move to another building to get away from the mice. I suppose if I had the money I could have sued them for health reasons and neglect and gotten some rent $$$ back, but lawyers are Extravagant. When June 1st comes I'm outta here and never looking back.

This company has the advantage of having Gice advertising and many of the lower-priced student quality apartments near schools in Evanston. This, I believe, is the only thing that keeps them in business. Not only was I treated poorly by the mgmt there, but I witnessed other people being talked down to and completely patronized by slimy realtors working for this company. If you have ever heard nightmare stories of realty agents, this could not possibly match the bill better. They are extremely impatient, pushy, irresposible, and obviously care nothing about what the tenant/potential tenant needs.

Barry Realty, now known as B&A Associates is one you should stay away from. Not only do calls to the maintainance department go unanswered (for example about the heater in the middle of the winter), but the administration is Toor. I regularly get letters threatening to evict me because I have not paid my rent, when in fact I always do pay on time.

I have lived in a Barry building at 1420 Chicago Ave. for several years now. While, in general the experience has not been as painful as was documented by the previous author, I must admit that if I had more cash, I would take it elsewhere.

I lived in this building because it had an elevator and interior laundry, in addition to having a 2 bedroom Alat and a/c. Since I have moved in, the service elevator has ceased to work, and Barry has made no efforts to correct this. The working elevator is often overburdened, especially on moving days, when it seems to break. And That's not the only time it has broken. And, since a broken elevator doesn't fall into a "high priority" category for Barry, if the elevator breaks on Friday evening, you can be It's going to be broken until Monday when Barry´s office reopens.

In terms of the laundry in the basement, we have had problems with machine vandalism, which has often made certain machines inaccessible. The machines share exterior vents and a really ------ water setup, which means that humid air fills all the dryers when any one is running. Also, I have had several experiences where when all the dryers are running, the electrical circuite for the laundry facility shuts down, leaving me with wet laundry and a $4.00 loss in quarters.

In terms of the a/c, I have no major complaints. It works just fine. But be sure to check yours BEFORE signing the lease, because I know that You've got other units that have experienced problems in this area.

A major complaint I have is with our inoperable dishwasher, which has not worked for the last 2.5 years. We complained several times when moving in and it was suggested by the maintenance staff that we,"make sure the door is shut" when It's quite clear that There's a problem with the motor. I´m a grad student. I don´t have time to devote my life to getting Barry to fix this, so we just don´t use it. We complained on 3 seperate occasions and then decided to just deal with it.

In terms of repairs, I would suggest that you not expect them to do much. I did have an occasion where the pump in my toilet was leaking water all over my bathroom, and I fortunately turned off the water and figured out how to repair it myself, because it took the Barry night guy about 30 minutes to show up, and my whole Alat would have been flooded by then. We have also made several reparations to the plumbing ourselves, despite the fact that it stipulates in our lease that we are not allowed to do so. Again, this action was taken after several failed attempts by the Barry staff. In terms of our blinds on the windows, Barry replaced the vertical blinds that used to be there with cheap horizontal ones and did not install them correctly. The result of this action has been that we have had 3 different blinds fall from normal use.

I have also had problems with the windows in my bedroom. First of all, one of them doesn't close all the way, which is a bit of a problem in cold chicago weather. I used electrical tape to close that crack. There was also leaking from where the blinds were drilled into the ceiling near the windows, which I can only presume means that There's water leaking into the wall. The result is a large water bulge in the plaster near the window.

You've got also stress fractures in numerous plaster walls. The bathroom tiles in one of our bathrooms is buckling, and There's also no ventilation in this room, which makes for a nice mold growth, requiring constant attention.

When we asked the company to repaint our Alat when we moved in and it was a mess, they did not make any arrangements with us, and sent two painters who painted the bathroom, painted the livingroom around our furniture(which was paint speckled as a result) and then took pictures of themselves with our camera.

We also asked the company to repair a sliding closet door which had been broken when we moved in. The ingenious staff´s quick fix was to take a nail and use it in place of the caster which was needed. The result was that the door fell on my roommate´s 67 year old father when he was trying to hang up his coat. the door now resides in our kitchen.

So, the long and short of our experience with Barry is that There's no service. don't expect any. You can sue them, but You've got stipulations in the lease which clear them of any misaction, so don´t expect it to go anywhere. And if you can afford better, then by all means, DON´T DROP YOUR MONEY HERE.

I actually never moved into a Barry Apace, but I did look at a couple of models before deciding, NO WAY!!!

First off the rental prices were around $1500 for the two 2-bedroom flats I looked at. A price that could be justifiable if the places were in stellar condition.

Instead I was greeted with two slummy looking places. The hardwood floors were stained, chipped and in dire need of replacement. The refrigerator was all rusted out on the outside and inside. Cabinets had splinters coming out and all the fixtures were old. The bathroom tub was missing a knob and the mirror was cracked, as well.

When I brought this up to the agent she said just make a list of all the things you want fixed and we´ll take care of it. That all sounded agreeable, but I couldn´t help wonder how it even got to the condition it was in in the first place. A well-maintained Apace would have had these things fixed long ago. I decided to pass on any of their buildings. The one I looked at was around 600 Hinman (can´t remeber the exact address).

From what I´ve read of other people´s reviews I think it would be safe to stay away from this company and their buildings.

You've got good things and bad things about this apartment, but I would say the bad far outweigh the good. I didn´t have time to shop around when I moved here, but if I had I doubt I would have ended up with B&A. To keep this short, I´ll summarize:

Good: clean building and common areas, quiet, relatively safe, decent sized studios, random freebies (but those usually indicate some sort of previous incompetence).

Bad: disorganized staff (I´ve been contacted 3 times in the mail about late payments that weren´t late, and it´s taken several calls to clear things up), expensive to park in their lot, old building with drafty windows and loud radiators, irresponsible maintenance, outer doors that stick open, tiny kitchens with NO counter space. Pray that they never remove anything from your storage psace downstairs, because they did from mine during a water leak and threw half of it out without asking. I was never reimbursed despite trying everything I could: they claimed no responsibility.

To summarize, I can´t wait to get out of here at the end of my lease.
