I rented my condo a few months ago and the couple that own it told me how great the apartment and neighborhood is and I can't complain. I've had no reason to go to the management office which sounds like a good thing but overall I'm pleased with my decision to move here.

Had a penthouse apartment with corner views of the city. Problem? Management group had no idea what they were doing. They kicked me out of the unit months before my lease was up because of plans to convert it to a condo. Interestingly enough, the buyer lived across the hall from me had said that they did so to pressure her into closing on the property in June rather than in August when she wanted to (and when our time there was legally up). Still waiting for my security deposit back...not sure if that's going to happen since they are still billing me for rent every month--i don't live there any more! yikes STAY AWAY.

printer's square was managed, through mid-2005, by waterston management, who were great. unfortunately, they threw current lessees to the wolves when they chose to sell to wolin-levin.

really, i could list a litany of complaints (not least of which would be the two illegal entries into my apartment they have made, or the time they told me they were going to enter the apartment and ended up leaving the key hanging out of the door all day) -- but let's sum it up with one tale: the building's sale was announced in late july, 2005. nearly immediately, rumors began circulating about the building going condo. residents actually started to receive junk mail from local realtors and apartment finders' services saying things like "Printer's Square is going condo! We'll help you find a new place." i wanted the truth, so i went down to the management office and asked the assistant building manager if it was true that leases would not be renewed at the end of their terms. she snarled at me, and i quote, "No! That's a vicious lie that certain tenants are spreading."

two weeks later i got the notice informing me that my lease would not be renewed and what the purchase price of my unit was.

i loved the building under waterston and would have stayed for many more years, but wolin-levin are slumlords.

The management ruins this entire building. They are rude and obnoxious and only care about moving units as fast as possible. Don't waste your time in this building. Its a horrible place to live. We now have to pay $100 for lockouts and also have to pay for any maitenance service! Recently I found a homeless man roaming the building. "Security" informed me they could do nothing about it since the non-commercial landloard (wolin-levin) stopped paying them. It took me two days to get rid of the homeless man. This shouldn't be an issue!

Beware.

If you are thinking of buying one of these converted condos. DON'T unless they change the management they are overly rude no help to you. They find whatever they can to charge you for and if takes weeks for that matter months to get things done. I do not recomend this property to anyone. Nay I do not wish this terrible burben on anyone.

I lived at printer's row from 2003 onward. My apartment is a studio with very high ceilings and rather spacious for the price. The halls and foyer have much charm as compared to the luxury high-rises going up in the area. The carpets in the hallways need replacemnt as they are old, the interior of my apartment needs to be updated, cabinets and floors. Otherwise, it is worth the price. I've found the management to by very attentive and personable. The neighborhood, perfect.

I moved in on a 6 month lease - I've been sick ever since I moved in. My air-conditioning unit (individual furnace) has leaked 3 times in the first month I moved in. The smell was absolutely horrid. I suspected mold and had maintenance out to inspect. All they did was bang on the pipes with a hammer...hmmmmm

Then, without warning, the building was sold and new management came in. All the old maintenance staff was let go and the new maintenance staff is "under" staffed. Your calls go without a call back.

So, back to the mold...I opened up the return for my air unit and discovered all kinds of crap inside the duct. I took a home mold test and sure enough, MOLD! The management company said it was NOT mold and that I just wanted to get out of my lease. All the while I am sick to death and buying new filters for the air unit every 3 weeks.

The windows are drafty (hot or cold) and the walls are incredibly thin.

The front lobby/vestibule is hot and smelly. It smells like mildew in the summer. The carpet in the halls and lobby need to be replaced - very dirty and smelly - no air circulation so everything just sits and stinks.

Overall, not worth the money I pay. I get electric bills that are over $150 per month - and I'm never home!

Where do I begin?

The first year I had a teen or twenty something music lover next to me who had apparently never lived in a multi resident building or perhaps believed the world DID revolve him.

Because of the way the apartments are arranged it only vibrated into my apt. (vacancy on other side?). There are long interior hallways that insulate you from most noise, except when music boy and or his guest would wait for the elevator, "Dude! ----! Wasn't that Awesome! ----!" Never heard a thing from above or below. Anyway, I tolerated it, waiting for him to get a clue, I knocked on his door. He apologized profusely, it would never happen again. Until the next day. This continued, not daily, but frequently. Empty apologies, ignoring visits from me and the "courtesy guards" who could do little but apologize and promise to report it to the office in the a.m. Finally the co-signer (read: parent) was notified and things quieted down for a few months.

Then he started up again, left garbage and beer bottles outside my door and referred to my as the elevator doors closed as, "that ----- who almost got me kicked out."

Actually, I liked his choice of music, but the hours, the duration and the intensity was a excessive. I repeatedly suggested requested demanded he move the speakers off the common wall. Why didn't I call the police? Like they don't have a lot of better things to do? Actually I did once and they didn't come. I just figured my luck the noise would cease minutes before they arrived and I'd look like the crazy one.
Well, he moved out, so I stayed. But young ----- moved in on other side of me. Partied loudly with friends, music and hollering to be heard over the music. They refused to open their door and courtesy officer just shrugged.

I also suspect the kitchen cabinets and countertops on either side of me were mounted on the common wall. If they ran a blender, which was frequent on weekends, it was like they were drilling through a vault. It made me cringe with thoughts of a visit to my dentist.

I figured I just had bad luck in the draw for neighbors.

The laundry room was very small and hot as the dryers. Any setting above low was a 450 degree oven.

The garage was okay when I moved in once you get used to leaving your keys in your car and finding in parked 3 deep. But the price when up for residents, but down for Mon to Fri parkers which meant we were paying more for more inconveinence. Oh, I can't forget to tell you the driveway is one way so you frequently have to wait. In addition there seemed to be less staff to help the knuckleheads (day parkers, conventioneers, etc) park their cars. And they never paid in advance before retrieving their car so you wait while they decide what credit card to use and how to use the machine to validate their ticket.

And the rent kept going up and up!

On the plus side, the apt faced inward (another building) and I rarely, very rarely had to use the electric heat. It was nice that each apt. had its own furnace, ac, water heater.

Except for an exercise room the place lacks amenities so unless your neighbors are really loud you don't meet anyone. You rarely even see anyone.

Would I recommend Printers Square. NO!

On balance, I think PS is good value for the location and not as bad as reviewer #1 would suggest, IMO. There is street noise, but it's no better or worse than other high traffic or downtown Chicago locations. Windows ARE drafty, however, and utility bills are a bit on the high side. But I've always had prompt maintenance service and friendly encounters with management. Location is ideal if you work downtown or need quick access to El or Metra lines.
