Pros: Landmark status, exposed brick Cons: Lived without gas for 10 months. No rent decrease and super just gave us $40 for a hot plate. Owner was invasive, would frequently request to enter our space despite not technically being allowed to do that, and she'd go through our trash. Super tried her best, but it was too much for one person to handle. Lobby smelled like cat pee constantly.

Pros: Amazing location between 1st and 2nd avenue; good light in front and back bedrooms Cons: Landlord is crazy. She entered our apartment without permission, took our mail key and went through our mail, and screamed at us like a banshee whenever we had people over (which was always within a reasonable hour and noise constraint.) the building would sometimes not turn on the heat and it was freezing. Kitchen appliances and set up is abysmal. Advice to landlord: New landlord, upgrade appliances

Pros: The long term residents are sweet and kind, the apartments are massive. Definition of an East Village pre-war building. Cons: The building is not maintained. The roof leaks, there’s paint peeling, the common areas smell like ass and are never swept. The trash you put on the sidewalk is sometimes taken back inside and stored in the halls for weeks. New rules and regulations crop up every few months (for example you can only take your trash out between the hours of 4-8pm), the landlord’s daughter who lives in the building regularly harasses younger tenants, she’s chased one down the street with a broom before and clutched scissors while yelling at another in the stairwell, not allowing him to leave the building.

Pros: Great location, never had any pest problems, lots of light in apartment Cons: INSANE LANDLORD! Two days after moving in I came home to her INSIDE the apartment with no one else there, in our bathroom, and she asked me “why I was there”. Tried to break into our apartment to confront us at 11pm over the recycling bags we used. Tried to assault firefighters that came to respond to a carbon monoxide alarm (attacked them with an umbrella). Verbally assaulted me every time she saw me. Stole my mail key out of my hand once because I didn’t check for mail for 3 days during a long weekend so I “couldn’t be trusted with it”. Came out of her door to yell at every person who spoke at a normal volume in the stairway. Could not have guests over, as she would become upset if there was any noise. Told me I should be expected to literally tiptoe around the apartment, as the noise of our feet was too loud. Cannot overstate how genuinely insane and scary this woman is. Advice to landlord: Seek mental treatment.
