“Pros: Location and nothing else Cons: Problem in the apartment, never fixed (it was the main reason for mooving out) Unreasonable rent increase for the apartment with old, falling apart appliances Disrespectful A&R management (ignored emails, never returned call, a customer service representative with an attitude) Advice to landlord: You are a solid one star business owner for years according to plenty reviews. Nothing will get better”
— 1658 YORK AVENUE · Manhattan“Pros: The doormen are incredible, the units are beautiful, and the building is situated right by Carl Schurz Park. Cons: The building was recently sold to A&E Management (I recommend Googling them and reading the articles). Since purchasing the building in March 2025, they’ve started gut renovating every unit as they vacate which, at any given time, is between 5 and 10 units under full demolition. There is loud drilling and hammering every day from 9 am - 5 pm. Additionally, they are still making their way through all of the hallway renovations — tearing out the ceilings and replastering them, and replacing the wallpaper and carpet. They’ve shut my water off many times without any warning (due to renovations), and I’ve had to go to Gristedes to purchase gallons of water. There have been fumes so strong coming through the vents that I’ve had to cancel plans to stay with my dog and air out my apartment. The heat has been weak this year (last year before they purchased the building it was great). I am also aware of several units on the lower floors that have had mice. Need to work from home? Need to rest because you are sick? Unfortunately, you won’t be able to do that here for at least a few more years. Unrelated to management, the building is full of a lot of poorly behaved dogs that bark constantly (and the walls are really thin). Lastly, if rent increases are a concern for you, they raised my rent to the max allowable percent in my renewal offer, despite enduring unlivable conditions for almost a year. The only person that would enjoy living here is a very heavy sleeper that is never home.”
— 1658 YORK AVENUE · Manhattan“Pros: Friendly and helpful doormen (my biggest pro!), clean, quiet, spacious, great location Cons: Solow forced me to negotiate severely increased (25%+) rent with another company (through Solow) that was in process of buying the building, and then the sale never went through. So I was stuck paying an insanely high price that Solow didn't even set. Solow says they will take into account my situation for next year's lease renewal (and in the meantime I see many other units rent for MUCH less than mine, with the same layout/view/floor). Then they still increased my rent again. I had to laugh. No thanks! Also, the gym isn't truly a gym. Just a couple of machines. And the rooftop space (even just lounging, not using the pool) costs a membership - not worth it. Advice to landlord: Stop the greed!”
— 1658 YORK AVENUE · Manhattan“Pros: nice enough doormen and porters, the super is an idiot that doesn't want to be bothered. Cons: the super is an idiot that doesn't want to be bothered. the "gym" is non-existent, tiny room with 5 pieces of equipment and a broken incline bench. not quick to replace broken appliances, they recycle old appliances when something breaks- because many apartments have been renovated and have stainless steel appliances not. so they have lots of the old white appliances to keep in rotation. Advice to landlord: if you want to charge premium rents, you need to have a "luxury building" don't charge $8k/month but have old appliances, metal levolor blinds and buckled parquet floors.”
— 1658 YORK AVENUE · Manhattan“Pros: Clean, nice doormen, attentive to service tickets, small gym, pool, laundry rooms not bad, and the apartments are spacious Cons: The kitchens are small”
