“Pros: The neighborhood is great and it’s a small tenement-style building. Cons: I had been in this rent-controlled unit for 6 years when I got home one night to find a note on my door saying the building was unsafe for occupancy and I needed to stay in a hotel. They said they needed to complete some repairs that could take months and that they would only cover a stay in a hotel for 1 week. The management company invited me to terminate my lease immediately. After they removed everyone in this way, my understanding is that they repaired the apartments and jacked up the rent. The apartments were not in great repair to begin with but it was still an insane way for them to behave. Advice to landlord: Go fuck yourself!”
