I've been living at the Grandeur Apartments a little over a year. May 2008 - June 2009. I read a lot of these reviews and my guess is that most the the complainers are not at all familiar with living in an older city like Chicago. I have rented in Chicago northside lake front area for over 6 years in a few different areas and for an "urban" close to downtown location with the red, purple and brown line so readily accessible. This location is great. Yes the heat can be an issue, but you can turn off the radiator and open a window and best part is you don't pay for it. I have not had a rodent or bug problem here. My apartment is great, sunny and rent is affordable for the location. Can't beat it. Marie Daravan is great building manager. If you have a valid concerns or problems, Marie will definitely take care of them. It's great having clean shoveled sidewalks in the winter. Those people who are complaining probably don't understand that they are renting apartments in older buildings in an old city (one of the most expensive cities even) and they would probably say the same of any apartment (short of a luxury) in Chicago.

If there is any maintenance request that i needed Marie has allways teke in care of it immediatly. Since Marie Daraban has been managing the building at 1055 Granville, this place is cleaner, the Lobby has been totally renewed freshly painted, allways fresh season flowers. The grounds r well kept. We all feel more secure and do to the fact of less party's and loud noises going on. Thank you Marie for the good job you doing,YOUR A BLASSING TO THIS BUILDING

Nice try Marie, writing a phony review for your self as Chitownbob60 speaking highly of yourself, when the truth of the matter is and allow me to place this quote in parenthesis for all of you reading this. ( THIS PLACE IS A DUMP!!! STAY AWAY! ) My sister and I would not have complained so much if only Willmette Realty had not made the biggest mistake in hiring this loud-mouth,wordy,fleshy strumpet to work for them. Oooops, did I say work. That was an error, cause Marie is remiss in her duties. A reasonable amount of time to fullfill a work request, that I can understand. However, when you speak to her you are threatened, and at times forcefully suggested that a ten day letter will be issued kicking you out onto the streets. I detest this woman. She is an old hag with huge saggy breast with horrid breathe. Surely threatning tenants can get you canned, not so if you work for Wilmette Realty. Still even the nicest of bossess will reach a limit. We are tired of the recurrent invasion of privacy from this woman. Our water was recently shut-off due to some building emergency. Sure that reasonable, yet she came back to our unit several time afterwards when my sister was not at home. She again threatened my sister. We contacted a law firm the deals with these types of issues. Legalhelprightnow.org gave us some good advise. They suggested that we attempt to contact the company's owners to resolve any un-answered complaint regarding Marie's abstemious persona. In my opinion she not worth the effect. We have heard her on too many occasions making racial comment about the ------ and jewish people. The one time was talking about the Indian ran convience store located at the allew way of the property, when she called those Indian people " inconvenience stores " cause they attract ------- and jews to the building. Perhaps she should go back to her hate rally and stay there than mis-manage this building at 1055 West Granville. Between her interweaving bull----- and this company's enability to fire this perverted racist , they have a lot of catching up to do.

I survived living in this building from 1996 to 2006. When I first moved in there was a great and responsive building manager. There were the problems of an old building, but the units were bright and sunny, the location great. Slowly it's went to hell. Many times both elevators were broken (nice living on the 12th floor!!), lousy electrical system with many blown fuses. I was lucky to have clean neighbors, but many don't and the pests can be BAD. Mice, roaches, silverfish. Definitely more shady tenants. Security slipping. Unless you have it on good authority that they've gutted and started new with this great old hotel, DO NOT move here.

I moved in recently, and like the new building manager, -----, but can't say much else nice about the place. The elevator constantly breaks and once broke for 2 weeks straight (it seemed like no one tried to fix it). Also, repairs that were promised have not been done. In the elevator I see cockroaches (luckily not in my apartment). If Wilmette wants to actually rent out more apartments in the building, they need to get the elevator fixed, pay attention and fix problems with people's apartments, and get rid of ------, the local manager for Wilmette Realty. I hear from a ton of people that she doesn't really care about people's problems. You get what you pay for, I guess.

This place sucks. Yeah its cheap but sometimes you get what you pay for. I was living on the 7th floor, and at 1am, I had a pipe burst in my closet, literally flooding my entire apartment. They never came to clean it up, and as a result mold grew everywhere. As everyone said, the elevators never work, the stairwells are filthy and I had my laundry stolen 3 times. (they don't lock it when they say they will on the sign.) Oh, and Metta and her husband were fired. The whole building is about to collapse from problems with plumbing, AND they will charge you 300.00 for the summer if you want to have an air conditioner. Don't let the neighborhood fool you.....its an awesome great location, but the apts themselves, absolutly suck and so does the new maintence. They don't care. When I made them run the security cameras (which suck, too-) and we saw who stole my laundry, one of the people who work for Wilmette Realty (Leslie)-started laughing. Not worth the stress and aggrevation!!!

Becareful of a a Senegalese family that stays in 1055 W Granville Ave Chicago, IL 60660-2152 on the 10th floor, in apartment 1004. I think they practice Voodoo, and I know of a fact that they are professional scam artists family. The mother of the household belongs in a mental institution, no joke. Here are two of their names: Macodou "Joe" Sall and Papa Sall...watch out

Do not live here because you definitely will hate it!!! There are a bunch of weirdos they let in the building because they want to run it into the ground to make money later. You have to call about 5 times to a bunch of different people if you want anything to get "fixed." Also, they let maintenance workers in by themselves when you aren't there and it is scary. The elevators are crap and mostly broken and a few times they turned off the water without notice. Most of the time the stairwells and elevator stink real bad. The management does not care about the building or the tenants at all so do not live here or rent with Wilmette Real Estate. Lots of people complain about them.

Had my walls torn open to fix some pipe problem that wasn't in my apt to begin with. Didn't get fixed for almost 2 months. I might have developed allergies from it.
Metta, the land-lady, is honest and nice and amazing. But her husband Senad takes refuge under his heavy Boznian accent to fool you. He won't get anything fixed, definitly not in time.
It's an amazing nbrhood, not necessarly squicky clean, but has a great nbrhood feel to it. Stay on the higher floors cause the "crack-lady" on the street gets a bit loud at night.
In terms of safety, it's Chicago, don't walk alone late at night, although I did that everynight from the Loyola library.
Good luck and good night
