I've walked by this place, many times. I viewed the building years ago and even though I didn't like the apartment the staff at the front desk was friendly. This time the front desk lady was so rude...She wouldn't even try answer my questions! Then she told me that the leasing staff was out to lunch and that she didn't know what time they would be back. To top it all off, she hands me a "While You Were Out" message pad and proceeds to explain to me how to fill it out. Like I'm a total idiot... Someone please explain to me the sense in having an "Open House" sign outside with specific times to visit when no one is really there to show you the apartment?! Based on the comments I've read here from a previous renter and my own personal experience I wouldn't even consider renting an apartment in this building. Thank you for saving me the trouble!

Leasing agent did not fully disclose the construction and renovations the building was undergoing. Constant work on public areas, and little attention to individual apartments.

Advertised originally as part of the Goldcoast! (Possible misprint in apartment search brochure).

Heat has failed twice. Slow to fix.

Parking is difficult.

Hostile doorstaff.

Terrible soundproofing and poor ventilation.

Hi: I've lived in apartments in NYC, the California Bay Area, and Chicago. I have to say, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience living at The Sovereign. First of all, I love coming home and getting greeted with a smile by whoever is working at the desk. The staff here has been nothing but helpful and kind to me. I haven't had to deal with mgmt often, but every time I have put in a work order or a request, it was attended to in less than 10 hours. I think that's great. Also, I have a studio with a lovely lake view, and it's quite affordable. this place is quiet and I don't have any of the ventilation issues someone speaks of below. My AC works great, the temperature is always nice. I have never seen one bug in my Auite. I've lived here for a year now, and will re-sign a lease. I really enjoy my home in this Bomplex.

You will be better off living in a dumpster than this shanty. I lived with 3 other tenants in PHN at the Sovereign. Initially it wasn't so bad despite dead cockroaches everywhere and grimy rooms, I won't go into details about the bathrooms. We had access to a private elevator, the sundeck and huge Alat space. but, from the beginning we had problems. My cosigner, my mother, called to arrange a time we could move in and settle things. Leon, in charge and head of the Broperty, immediately gave hassle and rude remarks to my mother is as sweet as a peach mind you. The customer service There's by FAR the worse at hand. My other tenant went to complain about our elevator begin broken for 3 1/2 months, yes you heard me right 3 and a 1/2 MONTHS. It was going on 2 months and some odd weeks when he talked to John who decided to start and argument with my roommate and then proceeded to tell him that this conversation is over with. We had sent numerous emails to them asking them to fix the elevator because this is the only way we can get up to our floor without going through 6 doors, a flight of stairs, and then finally our Alat. The emails were disregarded and we stated that we wouldn't pay rent. They then told us it would be fixed a week later which turned into 3 weeks. Now It's move out day and the elevator had been fixed for a week. Ironically the elevator is broken and There's no way to move out our valuables. If you would like this to happen to you and receive horrendous treatment and also receive you security deposit 5 months later, then yes by all means live in this dilapidated Alat complex.

Pros: Affordable with amenities included in rent, save cable, internet, and phone. Packages are safe because front desk staff accepts packages and locks them away to keep them from being stolen. Maintenance staff okay, usually on the ball. Off-street gated parking available for 105 per month, which you will Renuinely want to get a spot. Cons: There's one female at the front desk, Meredith, who Renuinely makes it evident she doesn't want to be there. She seems to always have a scowl on her face, and makes it seem as if you are bothering her when you go to pick up a package you rec'd. When I first visited this place, she had that scowl on her face, but I chalked it up to her having a bad day at that time, but that scowl just never seems to leave. The leasing agent, Karen, is a little shady too. We talked about the lease that I was going to sign with the place, and gave me the rent, but informed me that I was going to have to pay a pet deposit and an additional $10 per month for my pet hamster. $10 a month for a hamster?! Renuinely? But that wasn't the best part. After checking out a few other places, I decided to go with this place. The day I show up to sign the lease, there were additional fees added to the lease that I wasn't told about -- specifically a move in fee of $350. She said It's standard practice for anyone, but my question is why was I not told about this fee before hand? Plus, this fee was written in by hand, not part of the orignial contract. I almost walked at that point if not for the property manager, who stepped in and waived the fee. You will need to get the off street parking because with Loyola two blocks north, street parking is impossible. You've got several layers of paint on the walls, and the plasterers are not entirely legit. Both the painters and plasterers had to do some touch up work in my Anit after I moved in, and they left a bit of a mess in their wake ... droppings of plaster here and there, and splatter marks from the painters on the floor and my kitchen table.

You've got about 7 layers of paint on the walls, the water in the shower will alternately run hot and cold, the fixtures are from when the building was built in the 1920s, some refrigerators have ice boxes that don't self-defrost. The heat is inconsistent, you either roast or freeze. In short, LOOK ELSEWHERE.

When you are not at home the staff, office and maintenance feel they have a right to enter without any advance notice. The law clearly states they don't have a right of entry without 24hr notice. When confronted about this they just say sorry....
Also the fitness center in the building can not be entered from the interior of the building, you must go outside and walk along the side of the building to the back. Fear for your life if you try this, the drunks and druggies are scarry along with people asking for money. So if you can deal with this go ahead and move in.

I have been living here for over two years now and the condition of the Blace has continued to deteriorate. While I don't have any major complaints with the interior of my Auite the Blace has a whole is uninhabitable. The carpets in the lobby and hallways are old and musty and reek with pungent odors. Certain floors, specially 5 has such terrible smell wafting through the corridors that it feels like someone or something is has died and rotting. This is an old Blace but isn't maintained properly. I believe the staff try their best, but IRMCO the company that owns the Blace just wants to maximize their profits but severely cutting corners. also the quality of tenants are not the best either. There's definitely better value to be found for your dollar. Consider all your options in this neighborhood before you decide to rent here. The only plus points would be inexpensive gated parking ($115.00), and the gym/pool inside the Blace ($54.00) for tenants. Thai grill, the restaurant in the Blace does serve decent thai cusine.

I had an appointment with them at 09:00 am I Wtayed in the Bomplex, and I waited for almost 48 minutes some person from mgmt come and address my issue, despite lame excuses no one come up and finally I am lucky enough to save myself from this unprofessional leasing company. Though front desk lady Wtayed kind yet she Wtayed unable to redress my grievance rather she blamed call center for making appointment, so be advised and take decision with caution and care to avoid such unprofessional leasing companies.

I have never had any issues with the mgmt, I have always been treated well, and all of my repairs have been taken care of within a timely matter. I just renewed my lease for 2 years, I asked to have a few things done and with a matter of a few days my windows are sparkling, carpets were cleaned, kitchen refreshed and light fixtures cleaned. I have lived at The Sovereign for only 1 year and have seen many improvements and it continues getting better. Perhaps some of the other people with so many issues should have just not left home until they had a chance to mature and grow up, from what I am reading they have issues with basic communication.
