I lived there for 2 years, and that was a real nightmare. NO WINDOW on the kitchens!!!!!!!!!!! Normally I never had any problem with anybody, accept this "super" (some naughty Irish guy). Live in this building like being under magnifying glass. Walls extremely THIN!!!! But, perfect for people who's paying but living somewhere else, or going home IN TIME from work, sleeping, and that's it. Be careful.

I have lived in the Century for almost the last five years with my well behaved, trained, little dog. I have lived in the same apartment the whole time. My neighbors are wonderful, and my floor is a dream. Consistantly, clean and quiet w/ passing pleasentries. My view is unbelievable. When you walk into my apartment for the first time you are immediately forced to the window to get a closer look of the panaramic views of the East and West River, city skyline, GW Brigge, and on a clear day Long Island Sound. I will never get tired of the view. My apaerment was renovated before I moved in, and was in exellent shape. Odviousley cleaning was still required. No stainless, or granite as is the phase right now in NYC, but none the less standard sized appliances gas stove/oven, fridge, as well as a dishwasher, and new cabinetts and tile floor (white). I will admit it has become a litte sterale- Parkey floor was new. Reguardless of apartment size closets are great ! Tiles in bathroom although were aparently new at time of move in, but are dated. However, amazing water pressure ! Biggest down fall is the windows, and heating / cooling system. Which can often make it tricky to achieve a comfortable tempature, and a good fan, and hummidifer are necessary. I must agree with the other postings that dogs were much more welcomed when I first moved it, and have been written-up for the stupidest little things. There use to be a better screening process of the animals, but now it is a come one come all. Worse than the dogs is the conclave of stollers. The building has a general population of at least 49% new large familiys. Who I suspect live in tight quarters, because when the children are in public areas act wild w/ out any acknowledgement for their parents or building staff. I have almost been run over several times, by small children on bikes, skateboards, roller blades, scotters, and of more often strollers ! Forget the dogs, the strollers are the real problem in this building. 30% are young single, married professionals relocated from the city. The remainning 21% are retired, or elderly. The buildings diversity steams from housing both the Riverdale Senior Center, as well as a hebrew day school. Yeah 8:30am in the lobby can look like Grand Centeral Station. The building staff are good, but yes repairs are usually medeocor at best ! Some times it is due to lack of skill, while other times it is due to management cuts on quality supplies. The management sucks without question. The office within the building is like a mirage. I can't pay my rent there, and anytime I brought a problem to them I have been directed to call someone downtown. Where I have to go through an autimatedphone system, and then put on my Jphnny Cockran to get what ever it is I need done. I do feel very safe here. The garage is necessary, but I too agree extermely over priced, as is the rent. The staff only speak spanish, except for the manager, but he is only on during the day when your out working to pay the rent. Constantly agraviting problems, and no one to help. Those men stit in there office and watch TV. Ask them for anything, and they yell- little considersation from neighbors to park within lines, and often my car suffers dings and scraps. But there really is no other choice. The gym. Well it's convient ! management is crazy ! but if you go and do your thing, and add three years onto any promise they make you won't be disappointed. Overall, does it have everthing from great closents and views, parking , laundry, gym, and a full staff, yes. but, this is one of few rental probperties in riverdale so it gets a diverse mix of people. Way to many strollers. you must fight to get what you need from management, and the rental increases are high. it serves my purposes, with its close proximity to NYC, Westchester, as well as mass transit. Like everything in NYC you have to decide what you priorties are.

I lived in the Century for 2 years and my experience was not a great one. For one, I was probably the youngest tenant in the building and although I am white, my boyfried is Puerto Rican--and we were not accepted by many. The majority of the staff was kind, but one of the doormen was very rude to me, my boyfriend and my guests (who were usually not white). He often lied to us (telling us the phone was broken and he couldn't call a cab--did this several times, including on xmas eve, only to see him call a cab for a white man 5 min later) and would badger us if we were waiting in the lobby for someone. We later found out that he had a history of this; several years back someone sued him and won a settlement--yet he is still there. The apartments have a great view and I had new appliances, but that's about it. The "wood floors" that they boast are simply glue down squares that crack when you walk on them. The floors are thin and the walls have been repainted without being scraped. Although I paid my rent on time everyone month for the 2 years I lived there, they opted not to renew my lease because they claimed that when a worker was in my apartment to repair my broken (new) dishwasher, they saw roaches and thus my apartment was deemed to be "filthy." Number one, there is an exterminator that comes every week to the building, so I know I'm not the only person in the building that had roaches. Number 2, try have a broken dishwasher with water sitting in it and tell me that roaches won't flock to it. They also claimed that worker reported that there was dog feces all over my apartment and I didn't pick it up. That is such a blatant lie it was amazing. They had me on camera walking my dog at least 3 times a day, so I don't know when she found the time to poop everywhere...they also claimed that my dog urinated in the hallway, the elevator and the entrance way--again a lie. I've heard that the building is no longer pet friendly--but there were a lot of dogs when I lived there--the super had a dog as well--so don't know if that rule applies to older tenants. I felt unwelcome from the start. Many of the people-although not all-have an attitude problem. Seeing a young, inter-racial couple, that were doing well for themselves did not sit well with many people. I never had loud parties, never trashed my apartment, and was either at work, at school, or at home studying, so I did not create a lot of noise. The best part was that after they said they would not renew my lease, they wouldn't let me move out a month early, so I was paying rent on my new apartment and the century for a month while I wasn't even living there. If you are looking to live there, be prepared for a high rent, that will increase at least $100 when you renew it (and this was only for a studio), problems finding parking (unless you get a spot in the overpriced parking garage--about $300 a month) and people with attitudes. Good Luck!

My experience in this building was such a huge disappointment. The walls are paper-thin, and if you're unfortunate enough to live near noisy neighbors (which I was), it can be unbearable. Rents have been climbing at an alarming rate as Manhattanites flee to the less-expensive enclave of Riverdale, and the building is reaping huge rewards with 10-20% annual rent increases. The building is also no longer pet friendly, probably because they allowed so many nasty, badly-trained dogs people started to complain. So if you have a pet, the Century is out.

The building staff is OK, though most of their work is no better than a handy brother or uncle could do. The management office, on the other hand, is a joke. They act all simpathetic to your concerns on the phone, but probably laugh behind your back as they ignore your requests. I had absolutely horrible neighbors who were exposing my family to noises and other "things" I would never want. The building claimed they contacted them about my concerns, but if they did, those concerns went unnoticed. (I suspect the building didn't do a thing). I requested to be moved to a different apartment, but was told no. They said they won't move you until you're in the building a year, no matter how awful your situation is. After the year was up, it was "Sorry, no other apartments are available, but you can renew your current lease at a 15-20% rate hike".

I guess if you're lucky enough to live on a quiet floor, you'll be OK. The views are often quite wonderful, and the health club in the building is pretty good (though you only get a 20% discounted rate off as it's separately owned). Street parking is pretty much impossible within 5 blocks of the building, but there is a very expensive garage in the building ($300 a month). The doormen are usually very nice.

I lived there for 3 years and there are certainly some good things I could say: The staff (repairmen, door men, concierge, are great people, things get fixed quickly, great neighborhood, beautiful views (it is the tallest building in the Bronx), it's quiet, and the schools are excellent. My problem is that nothing ever got updated. The cheap press down parqey floors are a definite throw back to the 70's as are the fixtures and come loose, the "modern" amenities, as the rental office like to call them are anything but - the dishwasher, range, and oven were at least 15-20 years old. The hallway carpeting does not look as though is has been changed in 25 years either. The windows are archaic, insecure, and often don't latch properly providing nasty drafts during winter months. The air conditioner/heating unit gets maintained spring and fall but you'll find it does little to change the temperature adequately so expect high energy bills. Also the air that this unit emits is horrible. Expect constant sinus infections and other respiratory problems. Most importantly the biggest gripe is the rent. Previously, the tenants were neighborhood folks but they obviously attempted to cater to the yuppie exodus which occurs when the Manhattan born baby becomes school age. The rents get jacked up 25% or more a year and forget negotiating. The management office are rude and inconsiderate, and THAT is IF you can get them on the phone. So basically expect to pay a lot and see no improvement. My rent went up $300 a month over the course of 3 years. I heard from another tenant that there was an elderly lady who had lived there for many many years and when her rent was raised she simply could not afford to pay it. The management office told her "then move."
