“<b>NOTE:<b> I lived there from 2007-2009 but the system is putting in just one year for some reason. 405 Hawthorne could be a great place, but with some of the issues, it's just adequate. Location is a plus. You can easily stroll down the neighborhood to a convenience store, shopping area or bus stop in about 10 minutes. It's easy to get to know your neighbors since there are only 24 apartments. Parking is assigned. The complex is fenced in, but the parking lot is not. You can forget about having more than one car. No one was tow happy, but if you have friends over its best to respect the limited space or they'll find themselves at the impound. One space puts you right in the line of fire for tree leaves, branches and bird poop. One space was almost impossible to get into because it has a metal post and tree in front of it. The walls were very thin so you can hear just about everything that is going on next door, downstairs, upstairs, and outside. If someone has a party, you'll be in attendance, even if all your windows and doors are closed. The complex's courtyard design give it that cozy feel, but it's not kept up as well as it should be. Beautiful plants with dying leaves, a giant majestic shade tree that could use a professional trim to give it a little shape, and cracked uneven sidewalks in some areas, detracted from what could be a very nice unique landscape. There were a few instances of car break ins. The management did take action with the police department to patrol our area for a bit, and warned us about it. It isn't a crime-ridden neighborhood, but it is the city, so safety measures should be taken. The apartments are small, and needed constant maintenance because lower quality materials and fixtures were used. When I moved in, maintenance wasn't quite finished. Taking a shower at the same time as anyone you share the hot water heater with was a bad idea. One of you gets cold water, the other gets hot water. The only time there was an insect problem was right after Hurricane Ike. I had to take care of it myself. Once a year there was the annual, "No Water Day", where the old piping system would clog up. One time a descriptive letter about the problem was sent out by the management blaming feminine products for the block. Not exactly a letter one expects to get. At other complexes, you get use to the familiar faces that come into your home to make repairs. That wasn't the case at 405 Hawthorne. For a small complex, there seemed to be a lot of staff changes in that area, and responses to requests were slow. There's not a front office or main office. There were a few phone numbers to call the "office" for any issues. I didn't have to call too many times, but when I did, I had to leave a message. The apartments were not good or bad, they're just decent if you need a place to stay in Montrose for cheap. After Hurricane Ike hit, 4 neighbors vacated immediately, and there was a lot of construction that had to be done. After that it became a revolving door of new people, losing its personal feel in the process. Hopefully they'll get that back one day. I wouldn't recommend it as a first stop, but as a last resort if you really need somewhere to stay in that area.”
