“I've lived in these apartments since late 2012. While I don't have the extensive living experience some others have, I've dealt with the management here for enough time to form a decent opinion on their management of the property and the property itself. The property overall is very good, well kept and maintained. My wife and I have never encountered an issue that wasn't resolved quickly by maintenance. Both Lisa and Debbie are quick to respond to our issues, and keep us happy. There are some very immature and childish residents that live here that do very stupid things, i.e. spill coke in the elevators and leave it there, leave Whataburger food laying in the elevators, and leaving the clubhouse dirty, that usually tick-off some residents and the management. When stuff like that happens, Debbie will usually send-off a round of "memo's" where she'll vent her feelings. While its usually unprofessional, its very much warranted since I don't pay to live in someone else's filth. The only unfortunate thing i've come across while living here is that it's being turned into another hotel and the leases won't be extneded beyond Dec2013.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“This property is being turned into another Hotel. They aren't telling current or potential residents anything officially. They aren't extending leases past 12/31/13. It's not managements fault, but the management company and new owners who won't give them any information.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“I don t have an issue with building manager sending out notices to tenants in fact I agree she should let us know if the staff are starting to see a constant problem. However, what I do find offensive is how the notices are written. They are pretty demining and sometimes insulting. We are not your dorm students, your high school students or your kids. We are working professionals, your tenants and most importantly your Customers. Statements like What is wrong with you guys that are doing this? , I am so shocked that we have people living here that would treat their home in this manner, or are you the ones that are always complaining tht the building doesn t look clean? Again, I agree with the need to keep us informed of issues you see, but you really need to be more professional in how you word your notices or at least maybe have your boss proof read them before you send them out. How about putting some disposable wet wipes with a small waste bag or can outside the elevators or in the elevators so when people spill stuff they can clean it up. As far as the issue with the Residence Inn, you re not our mother you cannot tell us what to do or not to do. If the hotel as an issue and think they should stop the person and charge them. That will solve their problem.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“Renters beware. We have a manager monster here at Humble Towers Apartment. Everything written about Debbie's management inabilities and her mouth are absolutely true. She is the direct cause of why living here has been unbearable. She constantly blames the tenents and past management for any and all issues or concerns regarding the property instead of just fixing the problems, a job she was hired to do. It has been 5 years since she took charge of the property, she can only place blame on past management for so long. As far as management response, make sure you get her promises to take care of something by in writing and make her commit to having it done by a certain date in writing or else it will never get done. Not only is the manner in which she speaks to tenants condescending and patronizing, she goes on to memorializes it via her infamous newsletters that lets everyone who lives there know that it came directly from the horses mouth herself. Humble Towers is a great property but I would highly advise potential tenents to wait for new management to take over before deciding to live here. If only people knew how pristine this property was before the Debbie Era, people would run for the hills before thinking about living here. I chose to stay for as long as i have because i love this property, the city view, and the location, but even that doesn't outweigh the apparent management issues.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“I lived in Humble Tower Apartments from 2007 to 2011. The change in management resulted in a marked negative change in the appearance of the building and treatment of the residents. Those are the primary two reasons I left. It is a shame that such a lovely and historical building that was redone so nicely could fall into such disrepair. Debbie has poor management skills and has run this place into the ground.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“This place could be decent, except for the lying cheating, and stealing management. Lisa and her crew are the most dishonest people I have ever been in contact with. I would never recommend anyone live here. Roaches, mice, break ins, lack of maintenance, crappy cable and internet service. Your money is MUCH better spent elsewhere. This place is HORRIBLE.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“I agree with the review about the current management and security issues. We were told that security cameras were being put in the garage after the last time that a dozen or more of us had our cars broken into. The fact that Debbie is saying that there are no cameras, I think just proves the point of the last reviewer; the building is unsafe! There have been ongoing issues and arguments with management and nothing gets done. We have one treadmill in the gym, an uneven number of weights, which has been reported multiple times with a reply of "if someone took them once, they will take them again, so no they will not be replaced". Asking for anything is like an argument. Debbie is defensive about everything and "it's not my fault". As a manager you should be a resident advocate. No one is looking out for the residents in this building. The pool furniture was replaced last summer (after a SOLID YEAR of NO pool furniture) but the deck furniture has not been replaced even though we don't have a full set of chairs per table and most chairs have legs that are bending and table tops that are loose. The only outcome of asking management for anything is frustration. We have no ammenities in this building. If the rent seems reasonable, go check out City View or City Place in Midtown and you will see that while the rents are comparable, the ammenities at Humble Tower just don't exsist. The cleanliness of the building has gone down as well. The original marble has lost most of it's shine as a result of substandard upkeep and inappropriate cleaning materials for the surface. Dog hair doesn't come up with the vacuums in the hallways as I am convinced the company that the building uses (friends of management, and they often smoke together in the garage) aren't using commercial equiptment or commercial grade cleaning products. The outside of the building is filthy and smells of urine. The homeless are left to sleep outside (don't we have a security guard for that?) There is garbage everywhere! The plants in front of the building are for some reason being covered with broken bricks for some reason. This used to be a beautiful building and block, but since Debbie has taken over, it's one of the worst in the city. I would think since she manages the entire building that she would want it to shine as the hotels and retail spaces count of repeat customer buisness. If I were visiting, I would find another hotel. A big issue is the garbage over the weekend is not picked up and the entire first and second floor hallways stink. Why would you let garbage collect in Houston? This used to be one of the best places to live in Houston. It's one of the worst these days. I don't know if management gets a bonus for not spending money on the building but it sure seems like that's the case. I asked once if the issue was budget as we used to have so much more with the previous management team. I was told absolutely not. If that's the case, then current management is either getting bonus' based on budget or just truly doesn't care about the building or it's residents. Things need to change. If you are thinking about moving in, you should wait until things improve.”
“In response to the lastest review, first of all, there aren't any cameras in the garage. All the cameras are at the entries to the bldg. If someone wants to steal a bike or anything else for that matter, all they have to do is wait for the Courtest Patrol Officer to make his rounds and then take the bike or whatever, because they would know they have a certain amount of time before they would be back. As for the connecting doors to the Hotel being left open, this is a mandate from the Fire Marshall. I have absolutely no say so in this matter. If i did, they would certainly be locked. I know what electric meters are being referred to and this particular meter has been checked on several occasions and appears to be working fine. We are currently still working to see if there is anything else wrong in the apartment. If there is a problem with the elevators, no one has reported the problem to management. I really wish you would report the problems to me and give me chance to mess up before you decide, I don't know how to manage the bldg.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“Last week a residents bike was stolen in the garage. The cameras in the garage do not work as they should since the culprit was unable to be acptured. Where was the building security to intercept the intruder? Why was the footage on the cameras not captured? They likely do not work along with many other items below: What else does not work at Humble Tower?...the elevators (the elevators shake and drop floors at times)...the electric meters do not work (many geusts are charged outlandish amounts for electric), and the door that connects the adjacent hotel is left open (hotel geusts are able to enter Humble Tower at their discretion which makes everyone feel unsafe). Just last week hotel geusts were wandering the Humble Tower Floors at 2am due to a fire drill in the hotel. Comes down to management and lack of compasion for the residents. Residents are left in dangerous conditions with strangers having access to the floors, unsafe elevators, possesions stolen from what should be secure areas, and the building electric meters do not function properly. Why is nothing being done?”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“I have just recently moved into the Humble tower. I have had a wonderful experience with the management. Everything I have asked for or need has been met with friendly faces, responses and has actually been resolved. I am actually surprised to see the previous posts. I have not seen any mold on the pool deck and I think it is well kept. New pool furniture is in, and they are resurfacing the deck, but due to the Houston rain it s on a bit of a delay. I building is well built and I don t hear my neighbors at all, I do hear a bit of the elevator in the mornings and evenings, but I'm right next to them.I occasionally hear some street noise, but I like the city noises. I have not had any problems with security in the building. Its downtown and yes there are homeless and some shady looking people in the streets at night, but in the building I feel safe. Best thing is the location, starbucks on the 1st floor, its four blocks from discovery green and great restaurants in the pavilions plus the train is right there which is so convenient for those working in the TMC. Also the toyota center and minute maid are super close. I havent really taken my car out much since I moved in :) I plan on staying here a while I really enjoy living here. I would for sure recommend living here.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“This is a wonderful building. Beautiful, historic and wonderfully maintained. Security is excellent and the management is extremely responsive to any issues we've had. Love living here and hope to stay a long time.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“I have been at the apartments for a little while now and I'm not sure the new management know the meaning of the word management. Having such a beautiful pool and deck area is some place I want to take my guests, but with no pool furniture and it looking dirty as ever I am truly embarrassed now to call it my home. The carpets are disgusting and I am pretty sure there are still blood stains sitting in the carpet from months ago. Month after month things are promised and never done, and even talking to other residents they have the same issue. I really hope the management company can realize what they have done to these beautiful apartments. I now consider giving up the wonderful place to live somewhere else, and if management doesn't change I'm sure others will follow.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“My partner and I moved in to Humble Tower about a year and a half ago, and I can easily say that this is the absolute WORST management of any property I have ever witnessed. Other than occasional get-togethers that the mgmt holds for the residents, there is absolutely no sign of them striving to keep this building the cleanest and resident friendly around. We are treated like second-class citizens. Any issues we have with our apartments or common areas are treated like they are a nuissance and never taken care of. Granted, we finally got our pool furniture after a year of waiting, but we are not allowed to use it because the management team hired a lower than satisfactory contractor to re-surface the deck. Now, we are a week into the re-surface, and it's looking a though the residents of Humble Tower will once again be forced to spend another weekend peering out of their windows at a refreshing blue pool, wishing they could be out there enjoying it. My partner and I also feel as though the management is homophobic. We are always scowled upon when entering the building together, and never even get a wave or a simple hello from them. Most other residents get those common courtesies. If you are to be a professional in this world, you need to learn to accept gays and lesbians, and not treat them like they are riff raff. In my mind, the management team of Humble Tower needs to be fired and replaced with a more talented and caring team. When you manage a property such as Humble Tower, you have to listen to the residents and take care of their needs. We don't pay top dollar here to be treated like we are the problem. If the management team does not get fired within the next few weeks, I propose holding a town meeting style forum in which the residents can meet with the management team face to face and discuss the issues. Maybe then, we could get some things accomplished. Thank you, and God Bless!”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“This is in response to; "it smells like Spring time". This was written by the current management in an attempt to change the raiting. The terms that were used have frequently come out of Debbie's mouth in response to such issues as roaches on the deck. There was NEVER a roach problem before Evonne left. The patio was kept prestine. That is no longer the case. FINALLY the pool chairs have arrived after a year of puting the heat on. It's too little too late, especially when she stalks the lobby and holds people hostage for 10 minutes explaining how difficult and exhausting getting the chairs has been, with the subtext being "now stop complaining". The gym is an absolute joke. Everyone that I know in the building has gym memberships elsewhere because the equiptment is old. You can't plug in both treadmills at the same time because of a fuse that blew over a year ago! There is only one weight of every size so that you would have to work out the left arm and then the right arm. That's absurd. Management has no intention of adressing this issue. I have tried more than once. For the people who say that management is responsive; please talk to them about the gym and other complaints you see on this site. I will give you that if the dishwasher is broken, it will be fixed. That's a basic expectation of anywhere you pay $2000.00 The amenities are what should set a buidling apart from the next. More and more there aren't many to speak of. My lease is up in September and I won't be ren-signing unless the current management staff is gone or trained on how to manage a residential downtown building.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“When my wife and I moved in almost 3 years ago, this place was emaculate! A wonderful and inviting mgmt team that would do anyting to enhance your living experience and an extremely clean and well kept building. Ever since Debbie and the new mgmt has taken over, things have rapidly take a turn for the worse. Here are a few of my largest complaints in which I believe a number of other residents would agree with: 1) The A/C bill is ridiculous during the summer. To cool our 900 sq. ft. apartment during the summer months, our A/C bill is around $300.00! The crazy part of this is that we always working and only home for about 7 hours of the day, in which we run our A/c and we are gone to our inlaws almost every weekend. I can't image having a family living here in which at least one member is at the apartment every day running it all of the time. That would have to equate to almost a $1000.00 bill! 2) Mgmt has repeatedly stressed no grills allowed per fire code on the rooftop. First, it's all concrete up there with nothing to burn for miles around. Second, I find it amusing that One Park Place down the road can have grills all over their rooftop when they should be under the same fire code. If this fire code is true, I would like to see the manager Debbie stop smoking down in the enclosed parking garage during the days. I have seen her down there a few times lighting up cigarrettes which should be highly illegal. 3) While swimming the other day, I noticed that the pool deck has gone to the pitts. There are cigarrete butts all over the place and there are only 4 sunning chairs left up there. If mgmt cared at all about the residents, they would have invested in some new chairs before the summmer began and tried to keep the pool deck as clean as possible, being that there are many people walking shoeless down there. To wrap things up, if the mgmt of humble tower tracks these reviews online, I urge them to stand up and take action to bring the Humble Tower Apartments back to the amazing place it once was. Take some initiative to be sure the residents are happy, and try to keep this place clean. We all pay a lot of money to live here, and try to take pride in the place we call home. We don't want to be embarrassed when having friends and family over. I know you can do it!!!!”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“When I first moved in, I felt like this was hands down the best place to live for the price in Downtown Houston....that was day...Ms. Evonne really kept this place in shape in and out of the office...I really miss her customer service and professionalism...this will probably be my last term living here....it's like night now...the place is not clean and kept up, in fact I have become disappointed. Something really needs to be done!!!”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“Don't move here, they are closing the building down in December to convert it into a hotel. To this day they haven't told anyone not even current residents. I don't want anyone moving here and then having to move in three months again.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“My wife and I have lived here for 2 years, and have seen a radical downturn in customer service. The current management does not care about the residents like the old management did. The group that is currently here only cares about the business side of things and not pleasing the residents. The current manager is very dry and unsympathetic when it comes to any issues you may have (i.e. maintenance requests and comments regarding property improvements). Their slogan "Style and comfort in the heart of Downtown Houston" has lost its allure and should be looked at again by mgmt. We pay a premium to live downtown in such a beautiful and convenient historic building. The least we can get is a good management team that is willing to listen and do everything in their power to make the exprerience better. I had better customer service from apartment management when I was on college paying $300.00 for a small rundown apartment. My wife and I are both becoming increasingly dissapointed with this management group and are seriously considering contacting Westdale Management Group (property mgmt company) to discusss our displeasure and try to get some change. On a positive note, the apartments are beautiful and offer great views of downtown. All of the fixtures and such are top notch and make it a very comfortable place to live. Back in 2008 before the new mgmt took over, this place was the prime spot to live in downtown and really made you feel at home and welcome. I sincerely hope we can see a turnaround soon so that we dont have to consider moving.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“I have lived here for 2 1/2 years. I feel it is one of the best kept secrets in Houston and for that I am grateful. I was on a 6 month waiting list and had almost given up hope of moving in to the apartment with the floor plan I desired. Yvonne was nothing but courteous and helpful during the process and has been continuously throughout my stay at Humble Tower. I know that if I tell her about a problem, a leaky faucet, or even that I need two day dry cleaning to actually just take one day, she takes care of me professionally and with the utmost courtesy. I have lived in various apartments around Houston and usually to get something fixed takes at least 2 trips to the leasing office, not here. The layout of my apartment is very livable and the high ceilings make it feel much roomier than it actually is. They used solid granite countertops and real wood cabinets unlike the Rice Lofts which offer granite tile countertops (bacterial growth problem) and cheap, laminate cabinets. I haven't had a problem with parking (I appreciate the assigned space since I work odd hours) and if you want your bike to be totally safe...leave it in your apartment like I do. For being downtown with the plethora of nefarious characters lurking about, I feel much safer than in a outside door accessed apartment with simple lock windows in the burbs. That is what I call a false sense of security. This place is one of the best values for your money...and I am pretty hard to please :)”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“I have lived here for three months now and completely understand why it has a waiting list. The staff is curtious, responsive, and professional; the construction is high quality; the grounds are immaculate ans safe; and the other residents are nice, normal, professional people. My two complaints are that I wish the gym were larger and more modern but I can make do with what they have and I wish Main steet was more active with less homeless people but this is a downtown Houston problem in general. Overall, this place is a gem in downtown and would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet, safe, conviently located building.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“I've lived here for several years now and have noticed that the new management has really turned around. There must have been some growing pains at first but as the last reviewer mentioned, the previous management was good at promising but bad at delivering. One major complaint was that it took management awhile to realize the parking lot needed better security. Several bikes have been stolen, and after the recent vandalism, that's when they "woke up." When I have apartment issues, I usually turn to Evonne if I want the job to get done right away. Extremely curtious and very reliable. Haven't dealt too much with the new manager though. For the price, this is the best value for a "Class A" apartment. You get top quality construction, parking, and materials for the price of a lower tier midtown apartment. Better value than the Post Rice and much quieter. This apartment is very quiet, which I love. Sometimes it feels like you're the only one living there. The floors are seperated by concrete, so you'll never hear anyone running around. The rooftop terrace/pool has a view that you really can't find in many places downtown.”
— 914 MAIN ST · Houston“All right, I feel compelled to add a review because I'm seeing a lot of people say the management has gone downhill, and that has not been *my* experience. I've been here through three managers, and all three have been excellent in their own ways. If you've read the comments regarding the previous manager's motivational quotes posted in the elevators, well, suffice it to say that he was a very friendly and likeable guy who often went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that you turned that frown of yours upside down. It doesn't surprise me that residents liked him a lot and are maybe holding the current manager to an unreasonably high standard of motivational skill. :-) But when I have any issues that need to be addressed, I'm finding that the current management is just as responsive, if not more so, than any previous management. I think the motivational poster manager had a tendency to say "Yes sir, I'll get right on that" and then accidentally forget about it, whereas the new management seems to be a little better at remembering to address things the first time I ask. But the management is only a small part of why I love this place. I don't deal with management very much since I rarely have issues that need their attention, so other than their friendly greetings whenever we cross paths, they're mostly off my radar, as it should be. Now I'll tell you why I think I am in the Best. Apartment. EVAR. But my experience is probably different than my neighbor across the hall, because this building has two layers of apartments: there are "exterior" apartments with the nice views of downtown (and for all I know maybe the street and rail noise to match), and then there is an "interior" layer of apartments with NO view of downtown, but they are insulated from the street noise and the hurricanes and whatnot... I live in an interior unit, and I couldn't be happier. If I want a spectacular view of downtown I can just go outside, or up to the 11th floor rooftop pool area. This is the quietest apartment I've ever lived in. I've never heard *any* noise from neighbors above or below, and only might hear the neighbors next door if they're screaming at the TV during a super bowl party or something. It's *rare*, and when it happens it's justifiable, I'm sayin'. I work two blocks away from this apartment, so I no longer have to drive downtown and pay a monthly parking fee. I like to go to concerts, and the major concert venues I go to are all walking distance. House of Blues is basically right next door, Verizon Theater is a few blocks thataway, Warehouse Live is right behind the GRB convention center, Continental Club is on the rail line, etc. A few blocks up Main Street are some cool pubs. My car is a 2001 Ford Escort, and it doesn't have 20,000 miles on it yet. This place is CONVENIENT to the stuff I like to do. I have a kickass broadband internet connection by way of Phonoscope. No cablemodem, just an ethernet jack in the wall. Basic cable is free, so I just pay about $55 a month for the internet, which speed tests show beats the pants off of cable or DSL modems: http://www.speedtest.net/result/441028297.png I am an extremely satisfied customer, and I would (and have) refer friends to come live here. 2012 update: So, maybe you saw all those negative reviews from 2010~2011? Yeah, there was at least one seriously upset anonymous resident who used to post anonymous flyers in the elevators or SLIP THEM UNDER OUR DOORS, trying to stir up a revolt against management. Pretty sure he's gone now since I haven't seen a new flyer in about 6 months. I'm still here, though, happy as ever.”
“I would not recommend this property to anyone. While the apartments are spacious, have nice wood floors, high end appliances, and granite counter tops, thats about it. If an apartment does not have a good management team, then you can pretty much count on your experience being miserable. Over the last year and a half that I have lived here, everything has deteriorated rapidly. The common rooftop areas is seldom cleaned, if at all, the weight room has outdated equipment that becomes more and more worn down, and there is a BEAUTIFUL pool on the roof that has no chairs to lay on by it! The Air Conditioning/electric will easily cost you $300-$400 dollars per month for a 1000 sq ft apt! This place is supposed to be the lap of luxury, but it lacks all elements in that area. If I were a person that worked downtown, I would definitely look elsewhere. Midtown apartments are just as nice, cost the same amount, and have a far superior management team. I will NOT recommend this place to anyone until either management begins taking proactive steps to clean this place up, or better yet, replaced with a more experienced one.”
