3 positives. 1, it's quiet. I appreciate this the most considering I've lived in multi unit buildings before where the noise will drive you to move out asap. 2, it's convenient to get public transit into popular areas like Hyde Park and Downtown area. 3, the view is what sells this place and that's it!! Reading the past reviews I see that nothing has changed as far as the negatives are concerned. Parking is a joke!! The system that they use to keep track of the cars and spaces doesn't even make sense to the people who work there so I don't know why they don't change it. They really should consider getting a gate for the upstairs parking because cars parked closes to the main street are well secured. Not to mention anyone who comes to visit you will not have anywhere to park. There's no guest parking and trying to find street parking is difficult and dangerous! The guys who are supposed to be security should pretty much just be called front desk personnel. They are away from the desk way to much to provide efficient security for the building. It is very easy for the wrong person to find their way into the building because the tenants willingly let anyone in. The elevator's are a nightmare!! I refuse to go any higher than the 4th floor because I want to be able to use the stairs when needed and it is often needed. I'm not sure how they are coming up with the value of rent they charge for these units. The only thing valuable is the view and that's only if you have one. The kitchen and bathrooms and overall building itself has not be updated since the 70's.

ROACHES....ROACHES....ROACHES....ROACHES!! If the dangerous neighborhood, poor Security and Maintenance, lack of updates and Unprofessional Staff were NOT enough, thru all these years, I find I now have ROACHES in my Apartment coming in thru the Walls! They never update the units for current tenants, you have to move out then re-apply and move back in. So TIRED of seeing all the boxes of fake, plastic hardwood, new cabinets & such, only to find they are for empty units. They don't allow loyal tenants to move to upgraded apts unless your family has "increased". That is RIDICULOUS! Loyal, long term tenants should ALWAYS come FIRST! Gang signs on the elevators, Poor Parking, Outdated, Non-functional Laundry Washing Machines, this place is a JOKE. There are new developments in Hyde Park, South Loop, do yourself a favor and don't waste your TIME! ROACHES....ROACHES....ROACHES....ROACHES....ROACHES

Parking lot is a JOKE! So is "Security". I think that is why they changed it to "Courtesy Desk" because they know "Security" is nothing but a JOKE! I've seen cars left on bricks numerous times so I decided to put it out here online. I'm Thankful my car & myself made it out of SSBA unscathed! Your vehicles are NOT safe in the parking lot at SSBA! Factory Wheels or Custom Rims. BEWARE!!

Upon the first glance, this place seemed spectacular. Sadly, I must say that the only thing I will miss here is the view. 1) the staff are two highly unprofessional and lazy women who thrive off excuses and intimidation factors that elude any problems that may actually require any "work" on their behalf. 2) the elevator system is almost always faulty with at least one of the three out of order, usually on a weekly basis. 3)(Heavy washers beware) The laundry facility has faulty dryers that a. do not work b. (adding insult to injury) out of order signs are not provided, hence, the tenant must wash at their own risk. 4) (this is relative to both 1 & 3) if in the event that an issue shall arise from malfunction of the laundry facility,the tenant is beset with the burden of contacting the company responsible for repairs. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who is too busy to constantly have your basic tenant rights challenged. Thank you.

I moved here in 2012.I thought it was a nice area but crime is so common. A thief stole my catalytic converter the week of Jan.15,2013. So I'm paranoid that they may hit again and therefore I'm consulting with an attorney to find out what my options are for breaking my lease.(it's up March 2013) I'm moving. I can't pay for stolen parts from my vehicle and pay rent to especially on a fixed income.(senior) They have circuit tv to monitor the underground parking lot but nothing for the outside lot.

We moved in Nov of 2010, and at first the area had me a bit concerned, but SSBA is like an apartment from up north brought to South Shore. The view is AMAZING (we have a city view, and when we move we will miss it SO much!) We've never had an issue with noise (we're on the 24th floor), anything that needed fixed or replaced was one phone call away and within a few hours maintenance would be there to fix it. The staff has been very welcoming, especially the leasing ladies. We park below ground so the harsh winter wasn't an issue last year, (but at our new place I am worried about that b/c we'll have street parking.) All in all, had SSBA been up towards Rogers Park and we would have stayed here forever, but with job transfers we have to leave :(

DRUG PROBLEM: I was appauled when I was walking down the east stairwell at South Shore Beach Apartments. There were weed bags, "blunt gutts"(insides) and packages on the stairs, I could hardly believe it. I guess this is the "spot" for people to meet & get high & whatever else the want to do. Obviously Lazy "Security" doesn't check the stairwells periodically for foul activities! No telling WHAT is going down in these stairwells! And "Maintenance" obviously doesn't clean up much back there, either! BEACH UPKEEP: When I stepped outside to get a breath of fresh air by the beach out back, I saw nothing but trash, old bags, empty liquor bottles, drug needles and old shoes, etc. Just a MESS! It looks so filthy out back, it's just DISGUSTING! Then again, I shouldn't be at all surprised, this building has the laziest "Maintenance" ever! They take NO PRIDE in their work, they actually run from it and give you dirty looks if you ask about it. I guess I haven't been missing anything but "filth" going back there. PARKING: WARNING - Monthly Parking rates almost double every year since there is a mandated cap on rent increases. Legally rent can only go up 20% in this city, so this building raises the parking costs unreasonably to make up for that. And rent is SURE to go up to the MAXIMUM! It's getting really ridiculous! Don't expect any protection for your vehicle when paying these exorbitant rates either. Vandalism is common in these lots, especially since Security is usually busy socializing at the front desk instead of watching what is going on. Don't expect Security to give you a "Courtesy Call" if your car has been vandalized either! You can come down two days later & never know how long your window was busted. In the future, parking will probably catch up with rent prices! If you have a car, realize you will be paying thru the roof and expect that 20% rent increase as well! TRESPASSING/LACK OF SECURITY: There is an old, dirty, crackhead man that picks thru building's garbage bins. Security NEVER says anything to him, it seems they encourage this since he is allowed to TRESPASS! Be sure to invest in a shredder, this "bum" could be a low-key identity thief! Just think what will happen if this rogue ever gets inside! I'm sure "Security" will be too busy to notice! RECEIVING ROOM: The receiving room is indeed an appreciated convenience, IF the worker is ever there during her expected/posted hours! You can find her out front hanging out, talking, walking randomly down the block of South Shore Drive, at home, everywhere but in that room. If you are lucky enough to find her in the receiving room during her posted hours, expect a small party inside. With so many people to entertain, she is quite the Socialite! Personally, I've only used this room a handfull of times in my years at SSBA. This is second hand info from a much reliable source I felt the need to share.

AS IF THE HEAT WAVE WASNT BAD ENOUGH, THE AIR CONDITIONING THAT COMES WITH THE APT WAS NOT WORKING.BEFORE I LEFT FOR WORK I CALLED THE MANAGEMENT OFFICE AND SPOKE WITH SOME LADY TO HAVE MAINTENANCE COME UP TO MY APT AND FIX THE PROBLEM. SHE ASKED IF I WUD BE HOME I TOLD HER NO BUT I WILL LEAVE THE DOOR UNLOCKED SO MAINTENANCE CAN ACCESS THE APT. AFTER A LONG DAY, AND A LONG DRIVE FROM WORK IN THE HEAT I COME HOME TO A HOT APT ONLY TO FIND THE AIR STILL NOT WORKING. AT THIS POINT OF COURSE THE MANAGEMENT OFFICE WAS CLOSED. I THEN CALLED SECURITY TO HAVE A MAINTENANCE GUY COME UP AND I ENDED UP WAITING ALL NIGHT FOR A MAINTENANCE GUY AND HE NEVER SHOWED!!! NEXT MORNING I WAS HOT AND TIRED AND I SAW A MAINTENANCE MAN IN THE HALLWAY ASKED HIM DID HE OR ANY OF THE MAINTENANCE MEN GET MY WORK ORDER FOR MY APT AND HIS RESPONSE WAS "NO THEY NEVER GAVE ME A WORK ORDER" THE "THEY" HIS REFERING TO IS THE MANAGEMENT STAFF THEY ARE AS INCOMPETANT AS THEY COME. I FINALLY TOLD HIM TO GO FIX THE PROBLEM AND HE DID AFTER A LONG NIGHT OF WAITING.HAVING A MAINTENCE MAN COME TO MY APT TO FIX A PROBLEM IS A SIMPLE TASK AND MANAGEMENT SHOULD HAVE WELL TAKEN CARE OF THIS ISSUE. THIS IS ONE OF THE MANY TIMES THE MANAGEMENT OFFICE HERE HAS NOT RESOLVED AN ISSUE. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH MY LEASE IS UP IN 2 MONTHS AND I WILL NOT BE RENEWING IT !!

I AM A TENANT OF THIS BUILDING AND LET ME JUST SAY INCOMPETENCE DOES NOT BEGIN TO DESCRIBE THE MANAGEMENT STAFF HERE.I SIGNED A 6 MONTHS LEASE AND MY LEASE IS UP IN A MONTH. NEEDLESS TO SAY I WENT TO THE MANAGEMENT OFFICE TO GIVE THEM MY 30 DAYS NOTICE BECAUSE THERE HAVE BEEN ROBBERIES IN THIS BUILDING AND I DON'T FEEL SAFE HERE ANYMORE AND THIS OVERWEIGHT WOMAN NAMED SHEIKH TOLD ME I CUD NOT MOVE BECAUSE SHE PUT ME DOWN FOR A 1 YEAR LEASE WHAT IS SHE CRAZY I SIGNED A 6 MONTH LEASE AND SHE PUT ME DOWN FOR A YEAR? I TOLD HER I HAVE THE LEASE THAT I SIGNED FOR 6 MONTHS AND SHE TOLD ME SHE DOESN'T CARE SHE PUT IT IN THE COMPUTER FOR A YEAR AND THEN HAD THE NERVE TO TELL ME I CAN'T MOVE BECAUSE THEN I WUD BREAK THE 1 YEAR LEASE THAT I DIDN'T EVEN SIGN FOR I'M GOIN TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION THEY DON'T RESPECT A LEGALLY BINDING CONTRACT SUCH AS A LEASE DON'T MOVE HERE

The blizzard snow storm that we got hit with was chicago's 3rd largest on record at more than 20 inches. It was rare and unusual storm with the wind shifting the snow in every direction constantly. Traffic came to a hold on Wednesday, februay 2nd, and only a hand full of cars were barely able to drive on the thursday, februay 3rd, with most of them getting stuck in the snow. Streets were closed Hollywood (lake shore drive) to 83rd south shore drive!!!!!!!! No traffic movement on the main street!!!!!!!! Driving on Thursday, February 3rd was not only DANGEROUS but also almost IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!! I have been living in this building for so many years and I have witnessed snow storms and ground clean ups of snow. I must admit that the Staff of South Shore Beach Apts. did an EXCELLENT job in dealing with the severe blizzard of 2011. This fact has been mentioned not only by me, but also from other long residing tenants in the building.
