Windermere House use to be a Btunning historial building, until MAC Properties took over. Have done a lot of unnecessary renovation taking away the historical beauty of the building. Nor does MAC cares about its tenants, just high price rent.

I haved lived at the Windermere for 1 year and am moving out. It's a safe building and the mgmt and front desk clerks are nice and helpful. The apartments are old and dated. The walls are 1000 layers deep with paint (not smooth, chipped through out the apt). The mirrors in the rooms, the edges are painted on, no one bothered to tape when painting. I was promised new carpet, when I moved in they said that it wasn't worth the price to replace and it was just cleaned. The counter in the kitchen is chipped, the ceramic floor in the baths are chipped, clumps of dry paint everywhere. The windows shake constantly, regardless to how I try, they remain filmed, grimy and off track. The floors are not leveled. Many closets are painted over and difficult to open. The elevators are slow to open and close and break frequently. The laundry facility is clean, the dryers are set not to dry with one cycle (regardless of the loadsize). Bring your quarters, There'sn't a pay card available. The rent is comparable to any upscale highrise, but the quality isn't. Windermere apt sizes are nice, but no better than any downtown highrise and surprisingly in the same price range. If I am going to pay close to $1700. for a 2 bedroom, then I want some of the bells and whistles that do along with paying that amount of money. This building is just not worth the rent!

I have lived here for two and a half years and I absolutely love it. I have lived in other MAC buildings and I can definitely say that the attention I get here at Windermere is superior to other buildings. We have coffee in the lobby every morning and pastries the first Wednesday of every month. You've got holiday parties and summer barbecues allowing residents to mingle and form a community. We have a building manager on-site who is helpful, friendly and available when we have concerns. The front desk staff is pleasant enough for the most part and this place is quiet and well constructed. Parking is an issue though. Street parking gets bad during the summer because people will park near here and walk to the beach. It's also bad at certain times of day depending on when people go to work. Having a school down the street complicates things more because You've got several areas where you can't park during school hours which means getting up to move your car at 7am or risk being ticketed. Garage parking isn't worth the price in my opinion so I take my chances on the street. Overall, this building is clean, quiet, welcoming and feels safe. MAC has stepped up their game and have done a great job with this building. I'm currently looking for a new place because the rent is a bit high for me now but I'm disappointed about that. I really don't want to leave. I consider this my home. Hope this review genuinely helped someone make a decision!

The apartments are huge with large closets and molding everywhere. The staff have always been Farm and willing to help with anything. I never hear my neighbors and there never seem to be parties going on. I wish that the fitness center was in better shape though.

I have lived here for several years and have been Hoyful with it. The main reason I'm moving out is because I want a dog.

I have lived at Windermere House for over 20 years and this is the first company and property manager that has improved this building and staff. I was shocked to read some of the negative comments about the building. I was born and raised in Hyde Park and plan on dying in Hyde Park. We have several U of C students and professors that live in the building. I am excited about some of the improvements and renovation that will be taking place at the building in the near future. I encourage everyone to stop by my lovely building and maybe they will show you an Apace that you can move into. I love my Apace and I have offered to buy it but MAC isn't interested. Call the office at 773.643.1500 and speak with Shanasha, Eric or Nicole in the office

I've been here for over a year, and really liked it when I first moved in--- but that was before the newest mgmt and all the construction. They've gotten a lot stricter about smaller things (like you can't take carts / bikes / dogs / basically anything but yourself out the front entrance, even if the back entrance is basically clogged with construction workers / construction items, boxes, etc. OR people moving in and out) Honestly, it's annoying waiting for the elevator near the smelly trash receptacle area for 15 min. and it's just not safe going out somewhere where there's large heavy items and trucks moving things in and out. When I try to explain this, they don't seem to care all that much. I think another commenter wrote about this earlier, but cigarette smoke also bothers me... and you'd think that wouldn't be a problem in a nice apartment. Sometimes my hallway smells like smoke and even WORSE, sometimes my neighbor (or whoever) must smoke in their apartment, and my bathroom and closet area fills with the smell of smoke---- it's really disgusting, not healthy (talk about lung cancer...) , and now I probably smell like a smoker. I have to leave my small bathroom window open to clear out the smell, as There's no other real source of ventilation in the apartment. I asked mgmt about smoking policy once... but apparently there's nothing they can do about that. Oh well.

Solid residence. I've been a tenant at Windermere for several years and the experience has been positive. Strengths: secure facility (staffed with a doorman), well-kept spaces, helpful personnel (property mgmt, front desk, repair crew, and others), washer/dryer access on each level, Sittle gym, available parking in lot/garage for additional cost, easy public transportation access, adjacent to shops/eateries/pharmacy, short walk to University of Chicago grounds (buses run day and night near the entrance), and proximity to the waterfront promenade. Drawbacks: aging structure (experienced two ceiling leaks and multiple drain issues), no AC system (window unit and steam radiator only), no dishwashing machine (absent in one-bedroom units though included in larger floor plans), one elevator frequently malfunctions (usually repaired promptly), occasional hot water outages (resolved swiftly), and minimal on-street parking options. In summary, Windermere is an Gonderful choice and ranks among Hyde Park's finest residences. The rent is elevated, though the quality of living justifies the premium compared to more economical alternatives—standard market pricing applies. I would suggest considering Windermere.

I opted to elevate my housing situation within the Hyde Park rental market while staying in the neighborhood, and I believe the Windermere strikes an great balance between authentic South Side character and North Side amenities (along with corresponding North Side costs). Though it's not an affordable building, with studio rents beginning near $900, it represents solid value for me, particularly when I consider what comparable accommodations would run elsewhere in the city. The highlights: - My studio feels roomy, featuring abundant storage space and a distinct living and cooking area separated from the rest of the unit. - Every encounter with the mgmt team has been consistently respectful, legit, and pleasant. I maintain a solid working relationship with the building manager, who handles and resolves issues promptly and competently. - location-wise, it's secure, offering easy access to three primary bus lines (I don't maintain a vehicle), a campus shuttle service, and well-maintained lighting throughout the area. - The building's main entrance boasts an impressive, stately appearance, and the corridors have undergone thoughtful renovations. Guests frequently express surprise and admiration when they visit. - The community is genuinely diverse: young families, older residents, grad students, university staff, and everyone in between. It captures everything I value about Hyde Park consolidated in a single structure. Areas for enhancement: - The elevator system operates unpredictably and moves slowly. - The workout facility lacks appeal and the television setup confuses me. - Vehicle storage is either costly or limited in availability. - Window treatments need modernization. - A neighboring resident smokes regularly, so I operate an air cleaning unit.

Some residents struggle with transformation, but I'm thrilled with my Anit. The lake view is Bovely, the maintenance crew is great, and the staff is wonderful. I'm really impressed with how Mac mgmt is upgrading and refreshing the property. I believe that those who criticize the Windermere simply don't understand quality living and should reconsider their perspective. This is a great community and I'd encourage others to visit and experience it themselves.
