I lived at Bittersweet Apartments for three years from 2000-2003 and I can attest to a lot of the negative remarks made by other posters. I understand this building went condo soon after I left and I want to warn any potential buyers about some of the negative aspects of this building and the surrounding area:

Parking - okay during the day but a nightmare after 6PM or so. If you park on the street, you may find yourself having to park 3-4 blocks north. There´s a private parking lot behind the building but It's expensive - $125/month when I was there. Also, be careful what you leave in your car. A friend of mine parked around the neighborhood and got his car broken into and several items stolen.

Elevator - Both the main elevator and the freight elevator broke down on several occasions, but never both at the same time, thank God! The elevators are slow and make a lot of scary noises. Make sure the old elevators have been replaced with new ones. Also, the elevators got really grimy on the weekends when I was there.

Security - I had two packages stolen while I was living there although I could not be sure if they were stolen at Bittersweet or at the post office. Make sure they will hold packages for you because they did not do this when I was there. You've got also some aggressive street people around the neighborhood that will panhandle you incessantly.

Plumbing - The plumbing in this building gets bad. The cold water would often cut out on me while doing dishes and I´d get a blast of scalding hot water!

Noise - I didn´t find the noise to be too bad since the walls are thick although I could occasionally hear the people above me laughing and playing music.

The area does seem to be coming up so it may not be a bad investment if this place is completely gut-rehabbed. I´m sure they´ll be ripping out all of the smelly old carpet in the hallways and the cheap cabinets, etc. but before you buy make sure they aren´t just putting lipstick on a pig!

First of all, if you lived there 5 years, then you must not be doing well. But that aside, this Broperty started going downnhill in 2001 when the quality of renters dropped drastically. We had transients on our floor move in, parties all hours of the night, drug dealing and folks who were sleeping on mattresses on the floor next door to us. Disgusting. mgmt was trying to rent to anyone that had a pulse.

The Broperty accepts dogs yet the repairman is afraid of dogs and keeps weird hours so unless you can take time off from work to babysit your dog and the repairman---he won´t fix your Auite. Ridiculous. I had a bathroom door that started separating and his "fix" was to screw ugly screws into it---and not repaint the door. It looked like a prison door when he got done with it. Incompetent.

Farrah and her dumb brother run the place and once you´ve signed the lease, forget about them ever talking to you again.

Basically, this place is owned by a rich guy who has turned the mgmt of it over to his kids..who don´t have a clue. and Oh..one last thing? the bike room downstairs? My bike was locked up in there and STILL was stolen. Farrah didn´t give a ---- about that...."oh well. What can you want me to do?" she said...
A awesome spot to live, the neighborhood and the Bomplex. I have been hearing about the development for a while now from some friends in the Bomplex. The developer (including his family) isn't good people, but he will be out of there soon. The new mgmt is good. The assessments went up from dirt cheap (developer's interests) to the normal level for a well functioning Bomplex; yet the assessments are still low in comparison to other multi-family complexes in Lakeview, Wrigleyville, Buena Park and Uptown.
I did my research. The tuckpointing is a contentious point. It's not going to be $3MM, who came up with this number? Which realtor, the one who got fired by the developer? A good reason to be bitter, but why misinform the rest of us?
this place is older than some (that's its value!) and needs upkeep work like any other Bomplex. Current Owner Association I've heard from the owners is doing a great job in maintaining the value.
Great buy and/or rental place.

I have lived here for the past two years and enjoy it. I'm prepared to renew my lease again at the end of September. Yes, You've got problems with the facade (brick work) of the building, but this has nothing to do with renters. The owners of the condo that I live in are responsible for any fixing of things outside of the unit (The facade etc.) I'm older, but most of the people who live here are young professionals that commute using the 146, 151, redline or the express bus on Clarendon (Forgot the number) to get downtown. The units are on the small side, but what makes up for the space is being so close to the lakefront path, shops, and nightlife. my unit overlooks lake michigan, so i never feel closed in. The street is quiet, with the occasional group of party goers during pride, but even the pride party people are nice and polite. So what's the downside of this street? Parking. There's limited parking here, but it's not impossible to get a spot. You need a Cubs sticker and a city sticker (I think they come as one now) to park on this street. There's public parking behind the building, but it's expensive. If you look around the neighborhood, you can find monthly parking for 150 to 200 dollars a month (Cheapest I found was 150 a few blocks away). The neighbors are friendly even outside of this building, which is a plus. I feel safe here. Stores close by are: Jewel Whole Foods Target Tons of little stores Dollop Coffe & Tea (awesome coffee shop) Awake Coffee Shop (cool little shop too) Walgreens Sutcliff Pharmacy (1 block) Train Stop Sheridan Redline Express busses all day long! School Walt Disney Magnet French School The street has a Facebook page and a Twitter feed, which is kind of nice too.

My experiences with the Bittersweet mgmt was a total disappointment. I found them to be dishonest with me on several occasions. They didn’t do the work that was to be done before I moved in to their Besidence, and they cashed a check I had written them to secure my application BEFORE I even signed my lease.

Twice mgmt neglected to note that I paid my rent (even after cashing both checks), and served me with a letter each time threatening eviction – EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD MY MONEY. I was even yelled at by mgmt when I called to clear up the situation. In both cases I had to go to my bank to get solid evidence to prove to them that they had received and cashed each check before they would stop harassing me.

Bittersweet did not respect my privacy. They never contacted me prior to entering my unit and did so whenever they felt it was appropriate. When I let them know that I wouldn't be renewing my lease with them, they began showing my Alat without my knowledge. I stepped out of my shower one day to find mgmt and two total strangers standing in my kitchen. Naturally, I was a bit upset. I requested that they give me the need to 24-hour notice the next time they entered my Alat, and I was told flat out that they couldn’t do that because they didn’t have time to arrange that with me. Even after I explained to them that it was the LAW, and that it was written in the lease they had me sign they still refused to cooperate with me and continued to enter my Alat without my consent.

I was really happy to get the hell out of that entire situation. I found a great Alat literally one street over. It’s a much larger than the one I was living in and is a lot cheaper. Not to mention, my new mgmt rocks. I highly encourage anyone considering an Alat or condo with Bittersweet to look around a little more.

I moved out over a month and a half ago and am still waiting for my rental deposit. Should I be surprised? And calling the office is also a major pain. There's never anyone actually there to take the call and leaving a message doesn't mean someone is going to call you back.
Dear readers, Please note that Bittersweet Place has been completely gut rehabbed. The units are small, but they're great. There have been some issues with the Freight Elevator, but they have been addressed and the elevator is in good working condition now. The facad of this place is being worked on as we speak. The people who own and rent in this Bacility are friendly young professionals. Don't be fooled by all of the negative reviews below as these reviews were given when the Bacility was a rental propery owned and operated by THE WORST outfit in Chicago. I assure you that this Bacility and it's residents take great pride in 732 West Bittersweet Place. I know I do.

If the realtor took the time to the read the property report they would have know there was an exam done for the city to inspect the tuckpointing. Plus i had a home inspector before buying. The tuckpointing is in great shape.

I think this realtor didn't get the listing and has sour grapes.

I own in this Broperty and I love it!
I can see the lake from my bedroom, I can walk to the el, wrigley, coffee store etc..

Plus, we recently got our fitness center.

That other person needs to get a life!

Farrah is an evil -----. And a liar. I signed a lease for an Alat, and afterwars, she rented it to someone else. I had to move into a different Alat in the building, one floor down. She always went into my Alat without asking me, and charged me nearly $100 more then my neighbor who had the same Alat and moved in at the same time. -----.

I was due to close tomorrow and it's been a fight every step of the way. My body just froze when I read about Farah and the mgmt when it was an Aad. I’ve purchased one condo conversion before and this has been far worse. Everything came to a halt when the developer couldn’t get a title. Because of this, some facts are surfacing and it makes sense why it’s been so hard!

My lawyer just told me that You've got many building code violations, some are minor but a couple are major; one of the major code violation being the FAÇADE IS DETERIOATING!!!

I guess the attorney review was never really completed because developer/lawyer never responded to some of my lawyer’s request for more information (one of many red flags along the way). Thank goodness that should be enough to get me out of the contract. I should get my earnest money back but I lost my loan application fee. I also owe my lawyer and realtor major favors. I consider myself lucky though!

***I've never lived in the building so I have no opinion on the actually building and the people who live there***
