Generally a positive experience but several concerns: 1. noise It is true that the walls are paper thin and I could hear my neighbors sneezing and every word they said on the phone, let alone loud music -- the wooden structure'd allow all the annoying vibration to pass through. 2. heat There will likely be a week of no heat while it's freezing outside due to the two pipe system and they can do nothing about it. Bring a space heater! 3. unreasonable architecture If you go to the ground-floor package room off the management office hour, you can only access it through the freight elevator or through the first floor which only allows going out and not coming back in. Sometimes the freight elevator is not in use and I don't know how others handle going to the package room without going outside (that gate closes at 6-7pm also)... Worse still, if you weren't prepared and can't come back in, the only way is to go outside and circle back in from another entrance. (imagine doing that when you are in your pajama dress and it's like 20 outside...) 4. I think the windows are single-paned and not really insulated. They fog up easily when you shower and got frost all over them in winter. 5. No vent over the stove! Easy to trigger the fire alarm. I don't know about others. Maybe people don't cook in this building...

In summary: Perfect for youth. Both of my neighbors smoke cigarettes and pot... As one reviewer stated, you can smell it strongly as if you were lighting up in your place. My husband and I have also been taken back by the noise level at incredibly late night hours - loud music, yelling, screaming, you name it. It's a nice place and management is great, but we won't be staying for long.

My boyfriend and I currently live here and our lease is up at the end of next month. I have such a love/hate relationship with this building. Let me start off by saying that I am a senior in college and a lot of the residents are older and therefore do not like having people over frequently. Which I do understand from their point of view but this caused a problem on my side. Pros- Great management staff- Terry is awesome and I will miss him. Beautiful lofts- The exposed brick is beautiful. Updated kitchens. Extremely high ceilings. In unit fireplace. Everything is always fixed on time- Any time something has broke in my apartment it has been fixed within 24 hours. Doorman- Andrew is fantastic and I will deeply miss him. He is always willing to go the extra mile. Building- The builiding is gorgeous and modern and very secure. Rooftop- You get a breathtaking view of the entire city. Gorgeous to lay up there and hang out during the summer. Work out room- awesome. Cons- Parking- Street parking is HORRIBLE. You can ask any resident. My car has been broken into TWICE in a month and a half. And there is permit parking everywhere so if you have people spending the night they will get a ticket if they do not move their car by 9 am. Noise- If anything this has been my BIGGEST problem with the building. I can hear my neighbors coughing, cell phones ringing and alarms going off at 6 am. But I did get stuck with a pretty bad sitution. The neighbors to the left of us were an abusive couple and my friends and family would hear him hitting her, them screaming at all hours of the day, swearing, yelling about very personal issues. It is something I hope never to experience again. I do love River West and loved calling this place home for the past year. Unfortunely still being in college my friends can still get out of hand and one of my guests made an extremely stupid mistake that River West was not happy about. I def. would suggest this building to other people to live in. It is beautiful, charming and feels just like home. I will miss you River West but I am not ready to give up having parties and people over till 3 am on the weekends. I am not 35.

I LOVED my apartment there... by far the best space I have lived in. HOWEVER, my car was broken into, and a few months later was stolen. Finding a parking space is difficult in the first place, but it's better if you don't have a car if you live here. The actual building is nice, and the rooftop deck is AMAZING!!! The bad part of living there is that the walls are so thin, you can hear every word of conversations next door and above you, which means other people can also hear everything you do. The management office staff is great, and the security people that are regulars are very nice. If you don't mind people hearing you and you hearing everything your neighbors do, then it's a great place to live!!!

I lived in a 1br, 1ba in River West Lofts for 3 years. Positives Units have new kitchens, carpeting, bathrooms Views are good from many units Quiet at night Affordable and good restaurants/bars nearby (sushi X, Thalia, DeLux) Exercise room is adequate Maintenance guys are helpful and responsive Negatives Units are a little bit expensive, esp given the current renting climate You can hear your neighbors at times

Compared with other reviews here, I had a different experience. Don't own a car, so the frequently mentioned break-ins do not affect me (or at least not like someone who parks outside). They recently added parking. I can hear my neighbors too, but I live on the top floor, next to an elevator. So I only have one neighbor. They are usually very quiet and were never loud at night. As for maintenance, the mgt is not fast to respond to emails and not always available during their own posted office hours. But the maintenance staff is great and very quick about things. On the other hand I seem to be paying a lot more for my unit (1BR, 850 sf) than others. I moved in Sept-08. My biggest complaint is the old construction. It looks great. But brick is cracking and falling. So the 2 feet along the outside wall is constantly covered with various sized pieces of brick. And the windows leak so there is often wind noise - no problem with heat though.

The extras are pretty good in this building but the apartments themselves are not that great. The walls are very thin. The management is not the best or not even in the office. Cars are broken into almost nightly . I would not move in if I were you.

I moved in August 2007. The apartment was decent. A one bedroom loft with 900 rsf and bay windows for $1380/month is good for the area. Not the best deal in town, but not bad. The walls are incredibly thin and I routinely heard my neighbor's awful music selections at 2 in the morning and could smell smoke and burnt food constantly. There is also a lot of crime in the neigborhood. 2-3 cars were routinely broken into a night in the area during a week. The roof deck is amazing and by far the best aspect of the building. The management is terrible, however. Call to the office go ignored and follow up is almost unheard of. I had several issues regarding billing issues that were completely ignored, and instead of working to resove they charged late fees. I also had some very bad service attempting to add an occupant. Despite filling out all the paperwork in person, and weekly follow up calls, the occupant's name was not added to the mailbox and call box causing numerous mail delivery headaches. Despite regularly posted hours, they tend to work whatever they feel like, which seems to be 11am to 3pm.

I have live here for about 6 months now. The move in went smooth and fast as they have a loading dock and a freight elevator to use. After moving in to my 4th floor loft on the north side of the building I noticed that the construction across the street is very noisy and hard to live with. The construction starts just before 8am and goes all the way till 8 pm. This is at no fault to the management company who does a great job at helping when they can. A few times the noise started well before 8am and after speaking to the office they called and had it stop. There is a door person on duty from 6pm till 6am each day and they are very helpful. There is a good laundry room and exercise room. The penthouse and roof top deck are great. Parking can be hard and from what it looks like will get more difficult after the construction is complete. Do not forget that the building is a loft and noise can be heard in the unit. Noise in the unit can loud if there is more the one person living there, as the bedroom wall is only a half wall. There is a quiet time of 10pm till 10am. The few times I needed something fixed in the loft they were fixed within 48 hrs. Sometimes less then 24 hrs. If you are planning on moving here make sure that you either don't mind the construction noise or ask for a unit away from it. Cars are broken in to nightly mine was broken in to 3 times.

I've lived here a number of years, and look forward to living here several more years. In fact, as I compare my experience here with previous living experiences, and to the horror stories told by friends of their current living situations, I treasure living here even more.
The three managers are all extremely friendly and quick to respond to any maintenance request I've ever made. The maintenance staff is also courteous and efficient. The building itself is an historic landmark and great care is taken to keep both the exterior and the inside public spaces in excellent condition. The amenities are on par with any other--and more expensive--building on the Gold Coast or in Lincoln Park. But because we're in River West, the neighborhood itself is less congested and much less "precious".
Having lived in both, I prefer the semi- industrial look of this neighborhood.
