“Very unprofessional and rude management. I was really disappointed when as a real estate agent referred my clients to this complex but couldn't make to the tour because I had pneumonia and didn't want to pass the germs. Clients signed 1 year lease and management denied me referral commission because I didn't attend the tour, even though my clients told them that they were referred by me. The manager didn't even talk to me and hand up phone on me several times. Don't work with those people, they don't know how to do business.”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“I paid a full month of rent for June 2012 the last week of May 2012. I gave them my 30 days notice that June would be my last month. They notified me that I have to leave by June 28 (to clean the apartment) and they would pro-rate my rent for the 2 days. I have not recieved my check yet and I was informed today that I would not receive my check. It is blatantly obvious that I paid a full 30 days and I left two days prior. I will change this review until I receive my refund. Until then, I am terribly upset at Golly, the apartment manager, on how she handles former tenants and finances. They are definitely sharks here. I do not recommend this complex.”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“Stay away from this place!! They work very hard to get you in there by being super nice and telling you about all of the improvements the new management is doing to the building. We lived there for just over a year and here are a few observations: 1. The office staff and maintenence crew ALL completely changed three times. By the time we left 13 months after we moved in, there wasn't one person there who had been there when we moved in. 2. They very keenly played a bait and switch on us. They showed us one apartment that was totally redone with everything brand new and told us that the place we were getting would be the equivalent and just casually added that if the appliances in the apartment we were getting were still good, they would not replace them. We walked into the apartment to a 25 year old stove and dishwasher. Lesson learned on my part! 3. They also told us that they would either replace the carpet or just shampoo it. Of course, they just shampooed it. 3 months after moving in, stains started to appear all over the carpet. It was disgusting. When we moved out they then took money out of our deposit (almost $200) for carpet cleaning saying that they had pictures on file of the carpet from when we moved in. Of course, the pics were taken just after they shampooed it. Trust me, we are very clean people and didn't make one stain on that filthy carpet. 4. After speaking to many of the neighbors in the building, I heard the same complaints about the management from all of them. The place has a pretty high turnover rate for this reason. There are people moving in and out almost every weekend. Also it's loud and the halls smell like marijuana smoke most of the time. There are lots of young people splitting the rent, hence lots of parties and loudness. The office staff and maintenance crew are all very nice people, but for the prices you can do much better than this place.”

The Staff is professional and friendly, taking care of our needs without delay. The building looks better then when it was new! I do, and i will recommend this place to all my friends!”

— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“I have recently moved into this apartment complex with my husband and two kids. I was a bit reluctant because of the bad reviews online but saw that most of the complaints were about the manager and management company and that they had recently been changed. I am so pleased that I ignored them! The new manager Denise is lovely. I have two kids. The oldest (who is two) always want to go and visit her in her office because she made us so welcome when we arrived to sign our lease. The day we were moving in she held a community bbq where we popped in to meet some of our neighbours (all of whom seemed very nice). Louis, the maintainance guy, also went over and above his duty helping us to move in. At the moment they are renovating and upgrading the building. One elevator has just been upgraded and the second should be finished by the 20th October (according to the signs). The garage is now well lit and has been since we moved in. We love our apartment. It's in a great area...close to the Grove and Pan Pacific Park, some great restaurants etc. The Tar Pits and lacma are practically next door. Hancock Park is a lovely place to spend the afternoon with the kids. The building is quiet and we feel very safe here. There's a security guard who patrols the halls from about 11pm to around about 5am/6am. I've seen him checking the fire exit beside our apartment a few times. If you are looking for a quiet, clean, safe apartment complex in a great area I would highly recommend this one!”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“I've been here for one year and will move out soon. Worst apartment ever! They always shut off water to fix problems and there are always water problems! They shut off water for about 40-50 times this year! And now only this apartmenr has no power at all! So bad! Manager is rude. Elevetor is awful. You will regret at the first day when you move in.”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“Listen to all the other reviews! You can do way better in that neighborhood than this place. The reason I moved into this place when I did was because of the easy sign up process and the low deposit, and that the rent was considerably cheaper than any surrounding place. Turns out it was a bad idea. The sheer number of managers we have had in the last 3 years is just ridiculous. Place has certainly gone down in quality since I moved in. Add to that, after the first year, they had the audacity to raise the rents for those apartments. Yet they didn't drop it this year when every place did, and even though empty apartments in the same building were going for much less! Finally gave in and moved and am so much happier. Problems with the place: 1. Bugs! Lots of it. 2. Thieves! Lots of it! My car was broken into once after the gate was left open for 8 days straight with nobody fixing it despite numerous complaints. The second my car was broken into, the next morning the gate was working! Ridiculous! And they would not assume responsibility either! 3. Poorly lit parking garage, definitely not safe 4. Water switched off at least 3 to 5 times month, and at very important hours like say 9 AM!! 5. Alarms go off at weird hours! 6. Mailbox thieves! Even though it is inside the complex! 7. Security sucks. We are supposed to have an actual security guard inside the building and the parking complex. The guy rolls in for about 15 minutes every night and then leaves! 15 minutes! And the stupid son of a ----- had the audacity to once write me a parking ticket (inside the parking complex) because I had parked in another spot as my room mate had parked in mine. I was gone all of 5 minutes while I ran up to get my room mate's keys to move his car when I find the guard writing me a ticket! Idiots! I almost hit the dumb --- before he stopped writing it! Who writes a ticket for a private parking lot where you have every right to park! I never had issues with the noise insulation between apartments of with noise in general. Always thought it was quite a quiet complex. But the good doesnt make up for the bad! Stay away! FYI, a 500$ move in offer is pathetic, most places are offering at least one month free rent which amounts to at least 3 times that! STAY AWAY!”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“Dont be fooled by the nice neighborhood and the way the apartment looks outside. Its once you live here that you realize you made a one year too long commitment. The garages as you probably read elswhere is VERY poorly lit! I tripped in the garage over one of those stone parking things. The lights in the hallway don't match some are yellow/some are white.. even their EXIT signs are all different! ----- is the worst manager ever. She is rude. When ----- was the manager she didn't get ANYTHING done. ----- is bouncing off the walls which gets nothing done. She replaces maintenance workers in a monthly basis. That makes me feel unsafe, they get to handle our keys and I had someone come into my house one morning and he didn't even knock!! I did NOT receive a 24 hour notice. Not to mention the water shutoff without notice at LEAST once a week. Or the pest problems. The manager will state we have a terminator* come by every week, yeah right. When you go to the Garage look at all the weird spiders! I have never seen such huge daddy long legs! Maybe that is why the keep the garages so dimly lit with some of the lights not even working.. O gosh, what a nightmare. Please don't move in here and save yourself the pain”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“Love the Masselin's location on the "Miracle Mile!" The floor plans for a two bedroom are a little odd, but you get 1200 square feet of living space. The unit has a lot of closets for storage and the kitchen again closets and lots of cabinet space. There are two baths and you receive tandem parking in the gated two level parking garage. The kitchen units could all use new ovens. The walls are thin, at night we can hear faint snoring from the ceiling above and their television. Other than the occasional fire sirens, the complex itself is pretty quiet after ten PM. Love that factor; the last complex we stayed was extremely noisy. The grounds and pool area are nice with a gym off to the side. I have heard rumors of new hallway rugs and some other improvements in the works. The bathroom inside the gym is being revamped. I counted the pool chairs and I just hope they have additional chairs for the warmer months. Other wise it will be a mad dash to get a seat. There was a snafu that our unit had not been cleaned/detailed on move in day. It was pretty upsetting waiting several hours after traveling a distance the previous day. We waited and were very pleased with the outcome. The maintenance staff is very nice and continue to fix things when we write a work order and in a timely manner. Mail deliveries run pretty smoothly! Compared to other apartments in the area the Masselin is older and needs some updating, however we have a much bigger apartment at a bargain price for this remarkable area. You have the museum, Grove, food store, etc in walking distance. We needed to tour during the week because the office was closed on the weekends. So far I must say we are happy with our decision to rent at the Masselin Park West Apartments. Will give an update in a few months.”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“Yes, the gate was stuck closed last week. And just last night - It was stuck open! A diabetic woman passed out in her car, with her windows open and her purse in the passenger seat. She awoke to find 2 teenagers with bandanas covering their faces peering into the car next to her. She yelled out and scared them away, but what if they had decided to attack her!? I mean, one woman all by herself with a cell phone and purse in her seat..... Another persons car was broken into.

Also, the fire alarm went off twice. First at 10pm and then at midnight. One good thing is that during the evacuation I got to meet alot of other tenants. ALL complain about the management and building and theres even a surprising amount in a lawsuit with Masselin Apartments!

Honestly, I can let ALOT of things slide.... but when tenants cars are literally getting broken into every couple weeks, shouldnt they do something about it?? Or when fire alarms go off in the middle of the night with no reason, shouldnt they invest in cameras or 24hr security!?!?

They dont care about tenant safety... Its clear this apartment (excuse my language) SUCKS ---.”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“The poster below is absolutely right! Im a young adult (early 20's) and I hate this apartment! The other tenants might be loud sometimes but honestly you will get that at most apartments, it doesnt bother me too much.

What is running the apartment into the ground however is management! First was Dana, wow - she used to regularly argue with other tenants (screaming match!) in the office and lobby where anyone passing by could see! What kind of manager does that!?

Second is the new one, Stephanie I believe. She is NEVER around and pretty much does nothing. I have left messages for maintenance and noone has come, nor have they even attempted to call back. Maintenance people are awesome!! Its just that management never dispatches them.

Just last night, our gate stopped working to the garage. It wouldnt open or close. Everyone was stuck either trying to street park (never any available!) or stuck in the garage! I ran into other tenants who were getting frustrated. We all called the after hours emergency line which is an answering service. They gave us the # to security. Lady said security had been dispatched already. Someone else calls 45 minutes later and she tells him that security was dispatched 5 minutes ago!

Its 8:30am and from what I was hearing this morning, the gate still isnt working. People are honking, kicking the gate etc.

Cars are broken into here very often. Youre literally better off parking in the street! The mailboxes ARE broken into as well. I have yet to recieve any of my magazines or packages of things Ive ordered although tracking shows its been delivered.

Please listen to the accurate ratings from previous tenants and dont move here. It REALLY is as bad as it sounds. I personally cannot wait till my lease is over.

If you want to ask me more questions, please email me. It IS a real email. =)”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“I have lived here for a couple of years now and absolutely love my neighborhood, but I just can't take living in this building anymore and am now actively searching for a new apartment. I don't think it's a secret that Masselin Park West has become trash. I mean, there has been a huge turnover over the last 6 or 8 months as the older working professionals, like me,(and by older i mean late 30's to mid 40's), are slowly moving out because the quality of living here has been on a steady decline. It certainly doesn't help that several of our younger tenants feel that they are still in college, living in a frat house, and never showing an ounce of respect or just plain old polite common courtesy for their neighbors around them. The loud partying at all hours... the unnecessary screaming and yelling in the pool area, loud profanities, oblivious to the fact that YES there are actual people living in the apartments that face the pool who have to listen to this garbage, or close their doors on a beautiful day just so they can hear a TV program or make a simple phone call in their own home.

Not to mention the constant running up and down the halls, and yes, these are young adults i am talking about and they should know better. Its just not right.

I actually saw one guy, had to be in his 20's, SKATEBOARDING down the hallway the other day and i asked him if he would do that through his mother's house! WE ALL LIVE HERE!SHOW SOME RESPECT FOR OTHERS!

I saw another 20-something guy body slamming the elevator doors and when i told him to stop he apparently thought he was being cleaver as he laughed and told me that kicking and punching the elevator doors made it come down faster... I mean, OMG! Come-on! grow up!

If the noise polution is bad here, then the interior upkeep is worse. The carpeting in the hallways are horrendously filthy, as are the walls.

The tenants cars and mailboxes, (mine included), are being broken into regularly and nothing is being done about it, oh and the common doors leading to the street are propped open daily, (and this is supposed to be a security building), for anyone to enter and Management is NEVER around to make sure the building is secure, or if they are they just look the other way. I'm telling you it's not right.

It's a shame really... i think this building at one time used to be a lovely place to live. And it still has the potential to be that way again, if TOPA and onsite management would take an interest.”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“The walls are thin and I can hear my neighbors do EVERYTHING. The elevators are jerky and slow. The hallways look like that of dormitories.

Worst of all is the management. Dana does not EVER resolve any issues. Rarely ever returns phone calls and does not hide her distaste for helping tenants at all. She will argue with other tenants and apt employees for all to see. VERY unprofessional.

”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“I was sorry to leave. Loved my apartment and the management was great.”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“Extremely low class neighbors in this apartment complex. People leave trash in common areas (too lazy to take few more steps). Dogs pee in the elevator and hallways. Owners don't pick up dog litter from the sidewalk and grass area. Packages gets stolen most of the time when postman leaves it at the door (he knows packages get stolen alot) You can hear everystep of your tenants above. Last but not least, midnight firedrills twice a month doesn't make a very peaceful living environment. (Poeple don't even respond to firealarms anymore). Nothing is going to improve unless mgmt spends some $ and install security cameras to prevent trash dumping, package stealing, and false fire alarms. (and maybe fine owners for dogs peeing in the halls) but what can you ask for when they even disconnected cable tv from workout room because they weren't willing to spend $30 per month for the tenants. DON'T move in until they have rememdied this problem in any way.”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“I tried to stop bu this place to view an apartment and basically go yelled at by some rude woman over the PA system.

She was upset at the fact that I had stopped by to inquire about an apartment THEY had adverstised.

After her rude behavior, I moved on. I saw no need to investigate further. If they are that rude when you are just showing intrest in the place, I wonder how they would act if they actually coned you into signing a lease.

No matter how nice the place looks, poor management ruins everything. Especially in LA.”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“This used to be a very clean and nice building but over the years with a constant stream of managers (5 in 2003 alone), quality of maintenance and service has gone the drain. They put in a light color carpet in the halls a few year ago. Bad idea. You can easily see the stains. They start allowing pets a few years ago. Another bad idea. You can easily smell the stains. The hallways smell like dog urine. The management don't give a rat's behind about cleaning this place. The steady declining quality of this place does not justify the steady increasing rent. Let's not mention the roaches.......”
— 5700 W 6TH ST · Fairfax“Considering the area and the rent ($1,500 ), the quality of the management and maintenance is well below what is should be. It is not as clean as should be (or as it used to be kept). There is a red stain that has been on a wall for weeks. The cleaning crew has not bothered to get a wet sponge to wipe it off. Tile floors in the common areas were once glazed, pretty and shiny. Glaze was removed from some of the floors and now they always look filthy and grungy. It is suppose to be a secured building but tenants are allowed to leave doors leading to the outside propped open. Where is the security in that? Certain rules, like the outside doors being kept tightly closed (other than moving in or out) are not enforced. Fire doors that are suppose to kept closed as sometimes propped open with a rug which poses a trip and fall hazard. There was a small weight room and nice size recreation room. The rec room has been turned into a fitness center. Great but now thereýs no place to have a party other than in the apartments which are not very big for large gatherings. Management turn over is ridiculous. There were about 5 managers in 2003. One manager stayed only a month. I never saw him. There used to be scheduled spraying for pests. Because of different managers not keeping the routine, no spraying has taking place in about 4 years and the pests came and no one did anything about it. Former tenant left because quality of this place has gone down. Maintenance for normal wear and tear on the building is not as good as it should be. The building still looks decent but it is a long way from the "luxury" apartment it once was when I moved in. The location is great. Near museums, across the street from Park La Brea, grocery store within walking distance. If the management had kept up the quality this place had when I moved in, I would not be writing this complaint. I would be writing a compliment and encouraging people to move in. I am leaving this place. Maybe it will improve after I leave!”
