“The 5 Stars are first & foremost for the property manager Davido. He is one of the kindest gentlemen and definitely the best landlord I’ve had in all my years in L.A. He keeps the building clean, responds quickly to issues and always makes sure my packages get to me safely. He genuinely cares about the residents and takes pride in the building. Also the location is fabulous- close to everything and I love being able to walk to Runyon Canyon! I truly enjoy my classic Hollywood apartment!”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“Sycamore Lanai is a lovely place to live. I have lived here for just shy of 7 months and my time here has been very enjoyable and pleasant. It is right in the heart of central Hollywood. Shopping is super convenient and I am surround by a ton of entertainment options. There are great restaurants and bars all around and there if plenty to do around here. The apartment complex is cute and very well up kept. The property manager Davido and his team do an amazing job keeping this place running in tip top shape. I don't have any real complaints about this place. It is definitely a place that I'd recommend.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“I love living here. The manager, Davido, is so patient and understanding. I lost my job and he worked with me even though my rent was late. They let me transfer units twice within the building and did everything to ensure that I was comfortable and satisfied with my living situation. I appreciate him and this complex. The pool, when it's clean, is very enjoyable, and secured entry gives me peace of mind. They should work on updating all of units as well as general grounds upkeep, especially for what they charge for the area. Overall, I would definitely recommend living here.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“I love Sycamore Lanai and everything about it. Davido has been the manager since I got here and he has made my experience here such a breeze. I've known him for several years now and he always keeps the environment super friendly and positive! Every time I see him he always has a good story and a joke. So I guess you could say when you're living here you get free entertainment services as well. Couldn't have better things to say about my experiences here!”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“----------------- is a beyond horrible property manager at 1736 N Sycamore Ave in Hollywood. He is incredibly difficult to deal with as his rude, sarcastic, passive aggressive, mean, bitter interactions do nothing but instigate serious problems with tenants. He claims he has been a property manager for 26 years (which I feel sorry for him) but has NOT learned any customer service skills thus far. He has absolutely no soft touch skills to deal with tenants. He treats his tenants as second-class citizens, even though we are all vastly more polished, educated, successful financially and professionally than himself which makes no sense. He refuses to disclose his superior's contact information. He claims he is the only point of contact at the company. This is ILLEGALL practice. He acts as if he owned the property, he does not understand he is just a sad, lonely --- man. He lets other tenants AIRBNB their units for tourists even though the lease prohibits it. Allegedly some people have speculated he might get a cut for letting this illegal operation take place. DO NOT RENT HERE. You WILL have problems dealing with -----------------.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“Real name is Sycamore Villa. Recently moved in and here's why: 1. Units at corner are $500 more and others on the street are same price lower quality. 2. Not a big business feel to the building. At only 35 units. 3. Huge pool and cleaner than others I've seen. 4. So near the blvd yet I don't hear it. 5. Manager kept the whole process really smooth, seems to know the law, but also relates as a real person- not a car sales person type. 6. Talked to a few others to be safe prior to moving and they were pretty enthused.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“Glad I found this place--- no other managers on the block would answer their door or even their phone--how annoying. So now that I've been here a few months, this manager Davido is extremely attentive to the bld. and my needs. Altho there is a cleaning-crew for the bld. twice a month, I see the manager always keeping it even cleaner in-between. He's just got a real cool attitude and seriously cares about his bld., a rare quality, I've found. He even does extra gardening that the gardeners miss! Love my place, good size, contemp in style. Why would I pay TWICE this for the new units nearby???”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“I am in the process of moving out. And The manager, ---------------- (he bluntly requires us to refer to him as ------) better not try and keep my security deposit. Reason #1: First off the onsite building manager is weird. I know its Hollywood but he's weird in the sense of when my handsome male friends pay me a visit he makes very uncomfortable innuendos. We're not uncomfortable with the fact that he is ---. That's not the issue, hell who doesn't have a --- friend/family member? Nowadays we all do. But there is a way to present oneself with dignity and respect. So with that being said that is one of the reasons I'm leaving. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- ----------------------------. Reason #2: ----- allows tenants to smoke weed. I don't smoke weed nor do I mind if others do. But I do mind when it invades my private space. Nowadays it seems everyone has a medical card but like cigarette smoke, I don't want to be forced to smell others smoke. I've complained to him about it and in turn he has told the tenants I have complained about. I know this because they have shared this with me. My experience has been that you cannot share something with ----- about another tenant because he'll go back and tell them. I am a physically fit man so I could handle myself. I feel sorry for those whom cannot stand up for themselves. Reason #3: The building looks good, no doubt. But it takes ----- so long to fix things around the property. For the longest time the lock was broken in the garage area. I had to call the City to file a complaint. Homeless people were going into the garage and coming into the complex at all hours of the day and night and I no longer feel my valuables are safe. Reason #4: Managers are required by law to be onsite 8 hours a day when a complex has 12 or 16 units. ----- takes off to take care of other properties. He has clearly let me and other tenants know this. This is against the law. Reason #5: Some tenants have dogs. Although in our contract it clearly states "dogs must not defecate on our front lawn" they still make lots of noise. One guy here with a dog named ----- has some type of large Parrot that squawks all day long. Its terrible and the dude has a full sized dog that is locked up in a studio. Who is allowed to do this? I don't know nor do I care if this dog is a service animal, that's not the point. People we live in an apartment unit with no backyard. And to share more about this guy he is so lazy he just walks his dog down to the corner and back. He never spends quality time taking his dog on long leisurely walks. And his dog jumps on everyone. He has no control. I have complained to ----- about this but nothing has been done. Reason #6: The noise and mice. Its unbearable now for me to continue to live here. Both the noise and mice have become way too much for me to handle. And I know ----- cannot control the noise but he can hire a pest control company to do something about the out of control rodent problem. So although this is an amazing location don't fall for -----'s line of bull when he says "we are the cheapest on the block" because that is a line of BS. Check other buildings on the block before you sign on the dotted line.”

— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“i moved recently to sycamore villa--its real name. i chose it because after looking for weeks in nearby blocks, this was hands-down the most clean. Pool is huge, almost "olympic"--and often a fun scene. The manager really understands musicians--like me--and youth. Neighbors are super-cool. The place rocks.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“i just recently moved in , and am very pleased. I was lucky to get a rare unit w. yard. Took lot of looking to find this. The manager, David/aka Davido, exceeded my expectations, e.g.-- he always accepts packages for me, when delivered and I'm not home. When there were noise-issues from next door's Fresh& Easy market, he promptly went over and demanded from THEIR manager that they change their delivery-schedule, and succeeded--all beyond the call-of-duty. I feel well-taken care of, and safe here. I lucked out!”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“i have lived here happily for over 2 years, and the neighborhood only gets more interesting & convenient by the month --more stores & resturants every few months. I must laugh at the negative reviews i've seen--there's an old saying: "CONSIDER THE SOURCE"-- the last neighbor here to write such nasty, untrue things was a horrible, low-class creep w. noisy dogs, who got evicted. It's called RETALIATION, folks! other reviews are from TEN YEARS AGO, when the 'hood was a whole different ballgame. the current mgr. is strict, yes, but that only makes things peaceful here.Tenants are a much higher caliber than previously, & past mgrs. have been "absentee". Not this one. Any needs of mine have been handled within 24-hrs. When I ask, I get "extras". Close to ideal as you can get now in Hollywood.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“I moved into this building with high expectations. It looked very nice and clean initially. But noticed several problesm with the management there and the noise from the neighbors and from its thin walls. It has a pool but which has lots of mold growing on its walls. The property manager is on the property and is very weird and unfriendly. Notice lots of roaches and mice. The property manager attempted to take my $2000 deposit stating that I have i left the apartment a mess. Luckily, I hired a clean crew to clean it and took lots of picture.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“I needed a place for 6 months before moving in with my girlfriend. I found this place and it "looked nice". I put a deposit down on the apartment as soon as I saw it because the manager "told me he had someone who was about to sign the lease". After the move in, I noticed the garbage disposal didn't work, one of the plugs against the long wall (the plug that also has a switch in it) randomly doesn't work (you have to un-plug and then re-plug whatever you have back in there), and the heater in the bathroom doesn't work. Eventually I had the garbage disposal replaced, but the manager said the electrician didn't find any thing wrong with the socket (even though I explained the problem to him over and over again). After the first two weeks, I noticed cockroaches (little baby ones and full grown adults). I placed several Raid cockroach traps. I didn't see them too much after that, but was always worried that they're crawling around when I'm not home. Most of the neighbors there are noisy...especially on Fridays and weekend nights. The walls are very thin and the you can hear any body in the hallway talking. I especially enjoyed the neighbor right next to me who liked to listen to her loud "bass-y" music and the neighbor right above me who though it'd be nice to lift weights (or move furniture around) at 10 or 11 at night. Even though I was only here for six months I could not wait to get out. My last month I put in my 30 day notice 10 days early. The manager stated that he had someone that wanted to move in early and would pro-rate me 15 days rent if I could get out early. I agreed. He returned me full months check and I wrote him a new check for 1/2 months rent. I did the walkthrough and the manager stated that I should receive the majority of my $500 deposit back minus about $50 or $60 for cleaning. A month after moving out I received a letter stating that I wasn't receiving any of my deposit back because I broke the lease. It turns out the person that was supposed to move in to the apartment couldn't fit their car into the garage so they stuck me with the bill. They charged me $100 for plaster and painting, $60 for cleaning, and $165 for late rent! I'm currently fighting them trying to get my deposit back. Avoid this place at all costs! It's a mediocre apartment with a horrible property manager and property management company.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“real name is "sycamore villas". has been under NEW management, which has transformed this into a peaceful, safe environment! management is meticulous & obviously CARES, following the last "absentee mgr."/ it's actually a block away, mercifully, from the disney-esque street-characters & the street itself is quiet, no tour-buses. when you run out of any food item it's paradise to get to the corner grocery in 10 seconds. cleaning-crew cleans the place from top to bottom 2x a month, & mgr. keeps it up in between. noisy tenants have been weeded out! few students, mostly "professionals". i looked at other units on this block--they are mostly smaller, less updated, roughly same price, some higher... landscaping details have improved, much nicer neighbors. if this keeps up, i'm not moving again.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“Sycamore Lanai is a charming taste of Hollywood. It has a little something for everyone. From homeless characters sleeping in the stairwell to the radiant smell of Sinsemilla seeping through it s hallways. Sycamore Lanai is full of excitement. It is located in the heart of Hollywood on Sycamore avenue, between Hollywood and Franklin, you can t miss it, it s the building whose structure is protruding inward making any tremor of an earthquake even more provocative. (I can swear that Laundry room is getting smaller). Just walking distance from getting wasted. You will always be immersed in a world of enchantment. Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, Sponge Bob Squarepants. They are all your neighbors in the street, just don t look anyone in the eye and watch your cigarettes. Elvis is only a few steps away performing live everyday on the corner of La Brea and Hollywood. Be enraptured in the Oscars, they are presented yearly right around the corner, the streets get closed off for days before the event which gives you a perfect opportunity to urinate right in the middle of Hollywood blvd, a yearly ritual I will often miss. Bask and suntan in the Sycamore Lanai swimming pool, it usually turns from green to blue just in time for summer, have a barbq on the deck and meet some of your fellow Sycamorians, some of the best, top of the class people you ll ever meet. In the 5 years I lived and wandered around in the Sycamore Lanai hallways wasted, I never had a single bug in my apartment. Now, the other half of the building was infested with cockroaches but I guess that is just the luck of the draw. I ll take bad water pressure and a garbage disposal that doesn t work over bugs any day of the week. I ll take the noise of Fresh and Easy trucks at 4am and teenyboppers getting drunk for the first time and iridescent lights breaking through my window shades casting crazy shadows on my walls any day over bugs. I ll take a worn out, ripped up rug, that was suppose to be replaced after my first year there and the cracks in the wall from water damage from the big rains of 2005 over bugs any day of the week. Sycamore Lanai is not for everyone. As the ever present suicide is always a demon of it s luster. ONLY the strongest of Warriors can engage upon this shelter and only the greatest of Prophets may survive it s interior.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“I currently live here and our garage door has been broken for a month now and also my apartment has a leak that hasn't been fixed and my sink just clogged up and I can't ever get a hold of the manager. she never returns calls or answers the door! Also other tenets are getting very pissed tooo!”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“I lived here from 2004-2005 (about 13 months). We moved into this little square studio on the 1st floor with no light or circulation at all for $850 (due to the fact that we moved from out of town and had to find a place fast). About 6 months later he wanted $950 (for this crappy place). When we finally moved out he started charging new tenants $1100 for the same little 4 walls.

We kept the place spotless and paid the rent on time all the time. We were perfect tenants compared to the losers this guy had been renting to. We got a couple of phone calls from the manager that our rent check bounced but that was never the case. The next day the manager would call to say that it wasn't our check. The manager also gave us a hard time about everything - we had a friend park in our parking spot for 2 seconds so he can drop his belongings off at our place and the mamager found us to reprimand. Mind you this is the same building where there was a crazy lady who would stay up all night slamming her door shut and yelling at nobody in the hallway.

When we moved out the place was is good condition with some scuffs on the walls. He kept $600 of our security deposit for "painting"! These walls could not have cost that much to paint - there is only 1 full wall, the other walls have windows, etc.

In a nutshell, I woulnd't give this guy a dime - why? Beacause he has the nerve to charge that much money for a crappy neighborhood. There are clubs on the corner and the weekends are packed with little wannabe punk kids running around like they own the neighborhood. On the front lawn of this apartment I saw a girl so drunk that she was peeing in the curb and then fell over in her own excrement. Who wants to live on a block filled with human excrement. Infact, that's how I describe this building manager and owner.”
— 1736 N Sycamore Ave · Los Angeles“I lived in this building for a year, about a year ago. At the time, my tiny one bedroom cost $1100. It came with: an in-wall AC that didn't work properly, no screens on the windows, and a dysfunctional garbage disposal. We were promised they would be fixed, but they weren't. The appliances were VERY old (the oven perhaps from the 50's) and kept breaking.
In any case, they pulled some shady stuff with me - after we moved out, we were told that on top of keeping the entire $1100 security deposit, they wanted an additional $100. Now, we didn't leave the place spotless, but they told us that the carpet needed to be replaced and the paint was beyond repair. If I didn't pay, they said they'd screw with my credit.
I thought all of this seemed very odd, since the walls were literally spotless, and the carpet needed only a steam cleaning to be returned to its original condition. Then I remembered: I saw the apartment being advertised on craig's list (at $1300), and they were advertising it as having a new carpet and new appliances - this was way before I moved out, and they were planning on putting in new carpet before they had even seen it!
I sent them an email regarding the CL post, along with pictures I had taken before I moved out showing everything in decent condition.
Surprise, no reply. They haven't done anything to my credit but I am owed at the very least $600. Stay away!”
